RDM type functions (type password, type clipboard) not working

RDM type functions (type password, type clipboard) not working

avatar

I have noticed that since the update to 2026.3.15.0 the functions for typing password and typing clipboard in RDM do not work. I can copy the password to the clipboard successfully and use a different utility to type the clipboard into the RDM session, but having it be an easy one click in the taskbar all within RDM is broken. There are no errors, it just doesn't do anything when you click those buttons in the ribbon.

Hello,

Thank you for contacting Devolutions Support.

What you describe matches a change in how Copy username and password works since Remote Desktop Manager 2026.3.14. RDM no longer switches from the username to the password automatically after the first paste. You now tell it when to move to the next value:

  1. Right-click the entry and select Copy username and password.
  2. Click in the username field and press Ctrl+V. The username is pasted.
  3. Press Ctrl+Alt+V. This switches the clipboard to the password; nothing is pasted at this step.
  4. Click in the password field and press Ctrl+V. The password is pasted.

If you skip step 3, the username is pasted again, which is why only the username seemed to work.
We made this change because some applications, including browsers and embedded web sessions, read the clipboard in ways that made the automatic switch unreliable. Sometimes the paste came out empty, sometimes the wrong value was pasted.

If you’re on a version older than 2026.3.14, please update to the latest version first. If the paste still gives nothing in the embedded web connection after updating, you can enable this option: File → Settings → Application → Clipboard → Advanced → Disable null requester check.

Could you confirm which RDM version you’re using, and let me know if this sequence works for you?

Best regards,

Carl Marien

No, that is not what I am referring to. The functionality I am referring to is the type password function from the "Auto-Typing" menu. This is my most used use case in RDM when it comes to passwords (like trying to have it type in the password to an RDP session that went into screenlock for example).

The same issue occurs if I click copy password and then click type clipboard, nothing types. I know the copy function itself works when using control-V, just not the type clipboard option.

The issue appears to be something relating to the auto-typing feature ... it just does not work in RDM currently.

I am on 2026.3.15. I did not have this issue prior to this upgrade to .15

Hello,

Thanks for clarifying, and sorry for the mix-up.

I tested Type password and Type clipboard on 2026.3.15 in an RDP session, and both typed correctly.
Could you tell me:

  • Is the RDP session embedded in a tab, undocked, or external?
  • Does it also fail when the session isn’t locked, for example into Notepad?
  • Which version were you on before 2026.3.15?

Meanwhile, for a locked session, right-click it and select Reconnect, which usually skips the lock screen.

Best regards,

Carl Marien

  • The behavior is the same ... I generally run everything tabbed but the behavior is the same if I move that tab to my second screen (does that make it external?).
  • It does not work into a notepad or other app when the session is unlocked.
  • I was previously on 2026.2.19 before upgrading to 2026.3.15

Small update ... I dont know what the difference is but when I was going to record an example of it happening if I use copy password/type clipboard ... that is working today. Last two weeks it was not working. No clue what the difference is between then and now. Using the auto-type menu still does not work. I have a video of this, but it does not appear we can upload .MP4 files to tickets.

Reconnect is an option, however, it ends up being the same number of clicks in my environment due to the way our MFA works.

Hello,
Thanks for the details. Since Copy password followed by Type clipboard now works, but Auto-Typing still doesn’t, the problem seems to be specific to the Auto-Typing path. Could you help me narrow it down:

  1. How do you start it: right-click the tab and select Auto-Typing → Password, or from the ribbon? Does the other way behave the same?
  2. Where does the RDP entry get its password: saved in the entry itself, a linked credential entry (if so, is it a Password List?), or a PAM/checkout account?
  3. In the RDP entry properties, which RDP version is selected? As a test, could you switch it to FreeRDP, reconnect, and try Auto-Typing again?
  4. What is your Auto-typing wait time under File → Settings → Entry types → General?

If it still fails after these tests, a short video would help. You can share it through a OneDrive/SharePoint link or a similar file-sharing service.
Best regards,

  1. If I try from the ribbon tab it gives me an error stating "The Key is either emptry or contains invalid characters". I think this is related to it not prompting for my MFA value. I always get prompted for that even tho in my environment MFA gets appended to the username with a - character as the separator, not the password.
  2. I have a saved credential that the password is drawn from a saved username/password credential.
  3. It was set to "Latest" ... I changed it to FreeRDP (Latest) and now it seems to work properly.
  4. The wait time is set to 1 second.

So its interesting that it works on FreeRDP.

Also, I discovered that using the "latest" value for the RDP type on a connection where MFA is not needed ... it works properly. So it seems to only be an issue where MFA is prompted before typing the clipboard.

If it matters my OTP settings on 95% of my connections are set to: Source = Prompt, Mode = Append to Username, Combination string is a - (dash/minus sign).

Hello,

Thank you for your response,

We have made several fixes to the Type clipboard feature in recent versions, and version 2026.3.16.0 was released today with another one. Could you please update to 2026.3.16.0 and let us know if Type password and Type clipboard work again?
https://devolutions.net/remote-desktop-manager/home/download/

If the issue persists, please send us the following information so we can reproduce it:

1. Is the session opened embedded (in a tab) or external?
2. Which was the last version where it worked?

Best regards,

Tommy Sanders

Auto-type is working again now in 2023.3.16.0

There are two quirks I have found:

  1. when I operate with the asset sidebar minimized ... RDM will use the last password value that I had it auto-type regardless of the tab selected until I open and then close the asset sidebar.
  2. Using auto-type option by right clicking on the specific tab doesn't work either (I think because it doesn't prompt for the OTP that I have configured on the connection). This would be instead of using the ribbon commands. My thought was maybe that would get around the last password value.

Nothing major but I thought I would mention those two quirks for the future.

Hello,
Thank you for the update, and we’re glad Auto-Typing works again in 2026.3.16.0.
We tried to reproduce the two behaviors you described on 2026.3.16.0 but couldn’t. To keep this forum organized, could you please open a new forum thread for each of them? Please include:

  • The exact steps to reproduce it
  • A screenshot or a short recording (shared through a OneDrive/SharePoint link or a similar file-sharing service)

Since the original problem is now resolved, we’ll close this thread.
Best regards,

Carl Marien
