Hyper-V Dashboard for Failover Cluster: cannot open sessions on non-owner node
I have a failover cluster of 2 hosts. I targeted my cluster in a Hyper-V Dashboard, and I can open VMs on the current owner of the host with no issues. I tried to open a VM on the second host, and it returned an error of:
Unable to open the entry: the entry was not found
I created a new Hyper-V dashboard object, targeting the second host specifically, and I was able to open the VM with no problem. It also returned all the VMs in the cluster on both hosts, not sure if this is the intended behaviour, or if it should just return the VMs on that host specifically.
I am running 2025.3.32.0
Hello,
Thank you for contacting us regarding this matter.
Could you please confirm whether this issue started occurring after a specific action, such as an update or configuration change?
Additionally, could you let me know which data source you are using?
Does the issue occur with all entries, or only with the ones previously mentioned?
Best regards,
Tommy Sanders
Hi Tommy,
Some people could only see VMs on Host1 until I added an AD group with Read-Only permissions on the Failover Cluster. After this everyone was able to see all the VMs, however unable to connect to VMs on Host2.I have tried both removing the group, and changing the group to full access with no success. I do not recall any other changes to permissions on the cluster. No other changes to the RDM entry were made.
I can access the VM no problem by calling vmconnect.exe from my PC.
I now have two Hyper-V Dashboard entries. One points to the cluster (entry A), one points to Host2 (entry B). The current owner node of the cluster is Host1. When I try to access VMs on Host2 through entry A, I get the error. When I try to access VMs on Host1 through entry B, I also get the error.
I am using an SQLite data source. I created a new SQLite and XML data source and got the same problem.
Thanks!
