RDM Opening Windows On Different Monitors

avatar

Good afternoon.

I posted about this prior and it was mentioned that y'all couldn't reproduce the issue, but now I have other team member who are also having the same issue.

When RDM is open on the main monitor, if doing any kind of function such as opening File > Options, editing an entry, adding a new entry, etc., RDM opens the window on a different monitor.

Is this normal practice for having three or four monitors on a Docking Station?

Thanks!

Hello Chuck,

Thank you for reaching out to us regarding this,

Do you perhaps have the initial thread where you mentioned this? I would like to have a look if possible.

From my understanding, the Windows should open on the last location they were closed on but I may be mistaken on this and having a look at the initial topic may provide additional details.

Let me know,

Best regards,

Good afternoon, sir.

The original posting was: https://forum.devolutions.net/topics/39060/launch-rdm-on-last-known-monitor.

The DM's Zachary is referring to was my uploading of a video showing what is going on. That video was uploaded, and that was the last communications.

Hello,

I do reproduce the behavior, the application will be saved in the monitor you last closed as usually but any followed opened window that RDM will generate will be on the primary monitor that is selected as "main display" in your OS properties.

I'm trying to look around if there are an option to change those window prompt to a specific monitor. I'll let you know the outcome.

Correct me if I'm wrong on the behavior.

With further investigation I realised that each prompt will be saved on X display at X and Y position when you closed them.

I believe that if that display become undetected to bring up those specific window (in a scenario where you unplug your laptop and work with RDM), it will reset the positioning of those window and be prompted again on the main display by default, thus erasing the previous config saved when you have multiple monitor connected.

I'll have to discuss with the engineering team about this. I can see why this could cause irritation.

Regards.

Thanks for the info, Alexadre.

Let me shed a little more on it, as myself and a colleague are seeing the exact same scenarios.

So we each utilize three monitors. My setup is my docked laptop (closed lid) with three external monitors. My colleague's setup is a laptop screen and two external monitors.

In my setup, I have RDM running always on my left most monitor. It is a 50/50 shot if it will open on that monitor, or if it opens on another monitor and I have to right click > move to this monitor on the taskbar. When I open the options screen, edit an asset, add an entry, etc., nine times out of 10 that pop up screen will open on another monitor, and we have to drag it to the monitor we actually have RDM working on. Once we have the initial application window on the monitor we want, that does not actually change for that daily session.

Hope this helps.

My apologies, I did not see this before the last response.

This is spot on with the behavior we are seeing, yes sir!

Hello @Chuck,

So I've opened an internal ticket to review this as this will end up being an "improvement" attempt.

Reason being is because this behavior is also present in Outlook and realized that it is the OS that is pulling those kind of string.
When I tested It with Outlook, I've tested it with "New Email" window. The behavior is exactly the same. I understand that RDM has a lot more window prompt possible
than Outlook which is why the problem becomes more apparent on our side.

We have a few solutions in mind that we'll need to evaluate to see if It's possible to implement seamlessly as they could come with undesirable side effects and affect other customers.

The temporary workaround for you for the moment is to make sure that the application is closed before unplugging the laptop from the dock station and also make sure the laptop is plugged in the dock station before opening the app.

We'll keep you posted on the development of this issue.

Good afternoon Alexandre, and thank you for the response.

Yes, my laptop is always docked to the DisplayLink dock.

I appreciate you folks looking in to this for all us it affects.
