Is there a way to use the 'mstsc /shadow' parameter in an RDP session?
Hi!
We have a specific client (info screen) that we would like to connect to via RDP, without disconnecting the console session. Otherwise you have to log in on the console again or reboot every time.
A way to do this is to call the RDP client with the "/shadow" parameter, We managed to get it working with the default mstsc.exe, but can it also be done in a RDM session?
Thanks!
Daniel
Hello Daniel,
Thank you for contacting us regarding this matter.
You need to select your RDP entry and right click > view > console management > Terminal services console. In the console you will have the button to connect in shadow mode to an ongoing valid session.
Keep in mind the restrictions for shadowing are the same as with using mstsc.exe, which includes needing to be on the same domain and being an administrator.

Thanks!
I was looking for a way to pre-configure a specific session in the entry, so you can just double click the entry and you get to the console session.
It also seems the Terminal Server Console can't use a different user than the one which is running RDM. With mstsc.exe you can provide other credentials for Shadowing using the /prompt parameter.

Hello Daniel,
It is unfortunately the only method that can be used in RDM to use the shadow feature of RDP.
You can, however, use a different credential. You would need to specify it in the properties of the RDP session > Management Tool - Tools. By default, it will be set to "Use Default credentials", meaning the credentials of the RDP entry, but you can specify new ones with Custom, or link it to another credentials:

Thanks Richard! That works!
I assume there's no way to open it in a tab?
Hello,
Thank you for your swift reply!
We are glad to see that it works for you.
As for your question, you are correct, it is not possible to open it in a tab.
