Performance issues connecting to Mac with ARD protocol

Performance issues connecting to Mac with ARD protocol

avatar

I am using RDM Android on a Chromebook to connect to a Mac using the ARD protocol. I have a fast, low-latency internet connection. I have noticed two performance issues in my daily use.

When typing in a Terminal window on the remote Mac, each character initially appears blurry/pixelated, before being rendered clearly a moment later. This is slightly distracting and sometimes causes me to mistype.

When running a script that generates output in the Terminal window, I frequently realize that the screen has not updated for some time, and I have to provide some keyboard or mouse input to trigger an update.

I have another Android client, Remotix, that I believe implements the same or a similar protocol, and I do not see these performance issues when using that client (but I like your UI better).

Are there any settings I can tweak, or any diagnostic logs I could capture, that might help?

Hi,

I will open a ticket to investigate your issues. We do not have any settings that could help for those issues.

We will let you know if we need more information.

Thank you for informing us.

Hi,

The blurry effect is normal and is used to optimize the performance. This setting can be changed the following way:
1- Edit your ARD Session
2- Tap on the 'Settings' section
3- Under 'Performance' change the value to 'High quality'

This should remove the blurry effect. Please let us know it it helps with the refresh/update problem.

Yes, that made the blurriness go away, thank you. Based on the ordering of performance settings below, I thought "Adaptive quality (Apple MVS codec)" would have the best performance, but I guess that depends on what I'm doing and how I choose to measure performance.

Default
Zlib
Low quality (zlib black & white)
Medium quality (zlib grayscale)
High quality (zlib 16-bit colors)
Adaptive quality (Apple MVS codec)

When I selected "High quality (zlib 16-bit colors)" the blurriness went away but the color palette changed. Selecting "Zlib" fixed the blurriness and kept the full color palette. So, with a fast connection, that seems to be the best option.
