RDM on Windows - X session

avatar

I replied to another thread in the Linux section. https://forum.devolutions.net/topics/35468/rdm-and-x-sessions

I'm running RDM on Windows trying to connect to X11 on CentOS.

I like to use RDM in portable mode shared across locations sync'ed via Dropbox. Or, download a zipped copy of my portable version to a customer workstation and run it locally without having to install software.

Is there a portable way to have XMing work (or some other X program)? Can i download a windows EXE and place it somewhere in the RDM folder and have RDM launch it on demand? I understand it's not built into RDM. But i want to avoid having to install another application on the desktop i'm running RDM portable from.

NOTE: i have XMing installed and X11 forwarding is working fine from my SSH sessions. I'm just asking if there is a way to have a portable exe included in RDM to avoid having to install XMing everywhere i use RDM. I am not asking for Devolutions to create an X exe. I am asking if there is a way to insert an existing exe and have RDM open that exe when it initiates the X session.

Thank you!

Hello,

Xming it's an external software that is required from RDM, so you would need to install it on each workstation that you would like to use it with RDM.

On a side note, could you elaborate on the following sentence: if there is a way to insert an existing exe and have RDM open that exe?
How is your configuration of your session looks like in RDM?

Thanks for the reply!

I was meaning if there was a way to have a EXE in the portable folder (ie a portable version in XMing) that would get called by RDM. It seems that RDM is just forwarding the X request to something else listening for X sessions.

It would be nice to have a standalone portable version of XMing in a folder in my portable RDM that RDM could call and open if nothing was listening for X sessions.

Like step 3A from the portable USB version of RDM. We could insert some portable version of Xwindows app. (Does XMing have a portable version? or similar). I'm not asking to distibute the binaries. I understand the limitations of GPL (i saw that on another forum post). I'm asking to be able to manually add it and have RDM open it if needed.

3.In the installation folder created in step 2, create two folders:
3.1. A config folder.
3.2. A data folder.
3.3. A tools folder (optional, only if you intend to use external tools like Filezilla).

Hello,

I had a chat with my team and it should be already possible to accomplish using the portable version of RDM.

After configuring the Tools folder as mentioned on point 3.3, simply indicate the appropriate path to use this tool inside RDM via the File -> Options -> Path

This should do the trick.

Thank you! I will try that.

Do you know of a good/quick/easy/simple portable Xwindows program to use? Maybe i'm missing it, but I dont see a portable version of Xming. Or can i just copy the C:\program files (x86)\Xming folder to tools?

Hello,

I've made a quick search and don't find anything, but maybe you could try to copy/paste the content of the installation folder on your workstation of your XWindows program.
