I leave RDM open for long periods of time, in fact I rarely ever close it. In the last few updates, I've noticed that RDM wouldn't respond to any of my clicks, like it is frozen. However, there isn't a "Not Responding" message or anything like that. The window still looks like it's active, but you can't click into anything anywhere. If you right click on the taskbar icon and close, it wouldn't close. The only way to kill it is from task manager.
Any ideas what the issue is? I haven't updated my Windows either, I specifically disabled Windows Update. Nothing has changed on my machine.

Hello,
I am suspecting a hidden window, like an error message or a property window opened, but behind the main window of RDM. So you think it's freeze, but in fact, there's a window hidden behind.
Would that be possible?
Are you leaving RDM opened with RDP sessions opened as example?
Best regards,
Jeff Dagenais
Hi Jeff,
Yes, I am indeed leaving RDM opened with embedded RDP sessions. However, there's nothing behind the RDM window. I connect to a server via RDP, use it just fine, then leave my PC on for extended periods of time and I come back to it not able to click anywhere in RDM. I can't click the navigation tree, can't click the status bar or the ribbon menu, nothing.
I think what the issue could be is that I'm often connected to a VPN (in order to access client's servers via RDP). The VPN connection gets dropped due to a timeout policy and when that happens, my RDP session gets dropped as well. When that happens, I'll get a message from RDM about how it cannot connect to the server anymore, etc. But I can't click on that message or close that message.

I have similar issues. Also specifically when I have multiple RDP open, leave the PC and the VPN is dropped. After coming back all RDP have ended and give those popups. I connect my VPN and can typically hit 'ok' on 1 popup but the rest freezes. In my case after ~20 seconds the others unfreeze and I can close them all and restart connections. I don't need to restart RDM itself but it does freeze, and I checked with alt-tab there is no other window asking.
I'm using 2021.1.32.0 64-bit SQL datasource but had it already with mutiple versions.

Hello,
Thank you for your replies.
In that case, as a test, would it be possible for you to go under File -> Options -> Types -> Remote Desktop and check "Disable embedded RDP error message" and see if RDM still freezes when your VPN connection timeouts after leaving RDM opened for an extended period of time?

James Lafleur
It seems like that has fixed the issue, however this also blocks a lot of useful informational messages, such as the message that says you don't have RDP permissions when you RDP to a server that you haven't been granted access to. These messages are definitely useful. Is there another solution that we can try? Or is it possible to disable the RDP warning just for a specific session, instead of for the entire RDP type?

Hello,
This option is for the entire application. It's not possible to enable or disable it for a specific session. Does this means that there's a RDP error message hidden when you came back from a long period of time? Not sure at all, but we need to find why it's working fine with this option enable and why it's not working with this option disable.
I opened a case to our QA team so that we can test your scenario and try to reproduce internally.
