VMware Synchronizer - VM Tags

Devolutions has recently made some improvements with the VMware Synchronizer that our organization finds extremely helpful. One additional feature we'd love to see with the synchronizer is when it imports VMs from vCenter if it could also pull in the associated tag on the VM. We use tags in vCenter to give us a description of what the VM is/does. It would be awesome if that additional info could be automatically pulled in when imported into RDM.

Hello,

We will see what we can do regarding this, this is a good idea.

Any update on this? I would also prefer this feature implemented please :) as I mentioned here: VMware synchronizer issue (devolutions.net)

Hello,

Nothing new for now but thank you for noting your interest in this.

It's unfortunate this was never implemented. Not just tags, but OS type and other vm information would be very useful because then I could set some connections to SSH and others to RDP based on OS type or other criteria. Right now it's very basic and just syncs. It works, but it could be so much more useful!

I second this!!!

We will see if we can devote some time to improving the VMWare synchronizer in our next roadmap.

Other than tags and OS information (which could be used to dictate the type of the entry being created), were there any other fields that would be a useful improvement for you? I can't promise we'll be able to add everything, but we will investigate to see what the API allows and how it could translate to the fields we store in entries.

Not virtual machine specific, but maybe the datacenter, cluster, and folders within vCenter can be pulled in during a sync? That could be helpful.

I would say any and all data/tags are helpful. Including in the AD sync as well. The more information I can populate automatically the better. My AD information is up to date as are all my vmware tags, os information, etc. Any of this metadata helps sort and apply different templates/rules, for any of the synchronizers, not just this one.

It would also be useful if you can filter what is syncs. Currently it is syncing hundreds of docker and linux servers we do not require. Would be beneficial to select which folders it syncs over.

Those docker and linux servers are part of the reason I want this! It will make it much easier to sort to different folders for ssh vs rdp vs other with the additional data. This is really the reason we need it!

Thank you all for the additional information, I've added this to the opened ticket. I think it's worth it to give a good upgrade to the VMWare synchronizer and your feedback on how to make it better is greatly appreciated.

As a note @devolutionssyenite, for now we will focus on VMWare synchronizer but we will keep it in mind for the AD sync (and others) as well. There's a lot of untapped potential with synchronizers in RDM.

Completely understood, and the point was just that the more metadata in any of them is helpful for all the sorting, rules, templates, etc. Another good one for Vmware will be to pull the machine fqdn, connect via IP is not preferred, but I need FQDN as I have multiple domains.
