RDM slow over VPN

avatar

Hi!
when we are working from remote we use a VPN to our office and use RDM which connects to the SQL server database through that VPN.
RDM is slow and unresponsive in that scenario. Explicitly the open/close of a session is lagging and sometimes it seems to time-out when closing a session and keeps the tab (empty) in RDM, which then cannot be closed anymore.

Could you please provide me with steps to take to debug the lagging?

This behaviour happens on a 1 MBit connection with no more than three sessions opened.
So bandwidth cannot be the problem IMHO.

Thanks in advance!

Hello,

What version of RDM are you running?

Guenther,

I have a similar setup also. I work from home via VPN connecting RDM to a SQL Server.
I have some lag but not to the issue you are experiencing.

RDM - v12.5.4.0

PC - Win 10 Pro x64

Home Connection - 60 Mbps down / 5 Mbps up - ping 25ms

VPN - Cisco Any connect v3.1.13

SQL 2016 - Running on 2012 R2

@Guenther,

I would like you to turn on the Profiler by following the steps below to send us some logging information:

We will then analyze the Profiler results.

Let me know when it's done so that I can verify if we have received them.

hi Jeff,
I will ask my colleague to follow your instructions.

We had a remote session yesterday where he showed me the misbehaviour. The problem seems to be to "wake" the connection between RDM and the SQL server after working for like half an hour or so without interacting with RDM.

The steps we took where the following:
1. open VPN connection
2. run RDM
3. connect to session A -> fast
4. connect to session B -> fast
5. disconnect session A -> fast
6. working for half an hour on session B
7. connect to session A -> delay/freeze of RDM

I therefore will suggest him to send another trace and try to reproduce the above.

Is the Profiler an application/exe on its own or is it "within" the RDM-executable?
Just to know if that scenario can be profiled as RDM was unresponsive yesterday.

Due to bank holidays we will send the results not before Monday.

Hello,

The profiler is within RDM. You would need to open RDM to run the profiler.

As an update to this issue: we changed VPN from Microsoft VPN to Sophos SSL VPN -> Users report no more delays or freezes

Hi all,

We do have the same issue trough VPN also with Cisco Anyconnect, SQL Server 2014, Windows 10 (different builds incl. latest 2004), RDM latest version. This issue exist since the a few versions of RDM and on many different Computers. We do use Integrated Authentication for the DB connection. So I do suspect the integrated Authentication as an issue.
Any updates on this issue or any help?

Thanks :)
