RDM steals focus when reconnecting

RDM steals focus when reconnecting

avatar

There seems to be a long standing issue with Remote Desktop Manager. judging from the forum posts which are unresolved (unless I missed one with an answer?) When working in one tab on a vm (let's say VM1), if another tab (VM2) loses connection temporarily and starts trying to reconnect, it jumps focus to that tab. So then you click back to VM1 which you are trying to work in.. then the other tab VM2 does reconnect and so the focus jumps back to that one.
None of the settings I have found address this issue. For example there are 3 settings suggested here https://forum.devolutions.net/topic24258-rdm-steals-focus.aspx which none of work.
I imagine normally users don’t have this issue to often with connections being relatively stable. When working with ships or remote areas, however, reconnecting is a constant. It’s really frustrating when you need to have multiple connections open but you repeatedlyget interrupted in what you are typing due to shifting focus. We are really hoping you can help.

It also occurs when working in another application. Imagine typing an email in outlook, focused and typing quickly, and suddenly you're in a different window, where RDM just wants to tell you it disconnected or reconnected. Frustrating.

Hi,
I wish it was an easy fix but I'm not sure what we can do. Do you get a message when you disconnect? This one can be disable in the File->Options

Disable embedded RDP message

No, there is no pop up. Whenever the vm changes connection status it forces that tab in your face. I used this software at my last job and it drove us nuts. I still recommended to use it here because otherwise it's a great application.

Can this be an enhancement request? It is really disruptive to work flow when you work with semi-stable connections. I see at least several other posts condemning the auto-focus like this.

We will investigate. The problem is that I'm not sure we do it on purpose. I suspect that Windows give the focus back to the application.

By the way, it's now assigned to a dev for investigation.

Ok, thank you.

Hello,

Can you confirm if this only happens with RDP sessions? I fear there might be an issue with the embedded RDP active X that is out of our control, if that is the case.

Hi Hubert, I really only use RDP sessions.

avatar

Hello,

Unfortunately the issue lies within the RDP active X that we use in embedded mode. For now we don't have a solution, but we are looking to integrate FreeRDP as an alternative for RDP connections that we would have more control over.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hubert Mireault

OK I understand. Is there maybe an enhancement request number or something we can refer to if we want to keep up with this issue?

We will update this thread once we have more information about the issue.

Hi Hubert, do you have any new info for us?

avatar

Hello Patrick,

In your RDP entry you can go in the advanced tab and in the "RDP Version" box, select FreeRDP. Could you try that and see if it helps?

Hubert Mireault

Did this work for people? We are seeing the same thing when RDP sessions start to time out - it grabs the focus.

@Tom Likely

Have you tried changing the RDP engine to FreeRDP in the Advanced tab in the settings of the RDP session as suggested by Hubert?

That didn't work for me. It also doesn't even allow me to connect with most of our VMs (the method is not compatible with all versions).

I understand this isn't a major issue for most sites with stable connections, but anyone working with ships or other intermittent connections will feel this. It's very disruptive when trying to work on multiple sites.

Agreed. We are in healthcare - it's not only annoying, it could impact patient care.

Hello,

Quick question, can you tell us what OS you are both running?

A range of Windows
Windows 7, 8, 10, and Server 2012 / 2016.

avatar

Hello,

Thank you for the information.

And this issue occurs on all of them?

Windows 7 mainly here. Have not tested on Windows 10 yet.

avatar

The stealing focus? Yes.

avatar

Hello,

Our QA department is recreating the issue on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2012 Standard.

We do not have an ETA for the fix as this is not an easy one to address.

The current workaround is to update the system(s) running RDM to Windows 10 for Desktops and Windows Server 2016 & newer for Servers.

I've never worked at a company where I could take VM's and update the OS on a whim :)

However, it is happening here on Windows server 16 for sure. Haven't looked much at 10.
