Hello. I am looking for an alternative to the old mRemote program for managing numerous terminal server (remote desktop) connections. That program has been merged into another company and product, and the new "free" version has been needlessly crippled by only allowing 3 concurrent remote connections. A single license is out of my budget, and makes me pay for features I won't use. While searching, I stumbled across Remote Desktop Manager 5.5, and there are many things about it I like, things that mRemote doesn't have. However, it's the things it's missing that are making a complete transition difficult. Here are some things I would like to see added or changed:
1. There is far too much wasted space at the top of the screen. Getting the maximum viewable area for embedded RDP windows is essential for the work I do. I would like to see the All Sessions, Opened Sessions Recent Sessions, and Favorite Sessions buttons shrunk down if possible, and moved up directly to the right of the quick connect bar. Also, I see no need to have a large space that displays the name and icon for whatever connection is currently selected in the session list, so I would at least like the option to turn if off and get rid of all that blank space between the menu bar and the session tabs.
2. Along with no. 1, I would like to see an auto-hide feature for the sessions list, so it won't permanently take up screen space. Yes, I know it's resizable, but an auto-hide feature would be far more convenient than constantly resizing the session panel. Additionally, if you attach the session search bar to the auto-hide session panel, that would leave just the data source selection box on the bottom bar, and since there's no option other than Local for the Standard edition, an option to turn that bar off would also help maximize viewable remote terminal space.
3. I would also like to see a feature that allows the active RDP tab capture all windows hotkey commands. For example, when I'm working in an embedded RDP window, and I press Window Key + R, I want a run box to appear in the remote terminal, not on my local PC. mRemote has this capability, which is highly useful.
Please let me know if I haven't explained any of the requests thoroughly enough. I know I'm asking for a lot here, and I know it won't all happen at once. I'd just like to know if any of these changes are feasible, and what kind of a time frame I'd be looking at before seeing them implemented. Thanks for any feedback you can give me on these requests.
Hi,
First of all, thank you for your comments. Maximizing the embedded area was already in my plan for the next major update and your comments will help me. I also added to my todo list the Window key problem that you described to me. Unfortunally I can't give you an exact time frame for the next update. I will do my best to release this feature by the end of the summer. If you look at the change history, you will see that the development of Remote Desktop Manager is very active.
I hope this answers a little bit your questions. Thank you again.

Hi,
I just did some test for the Windows + R and it's work for m, but make sure that your session is configured to send the keyboard key to the remote computer :
Edit Sessions
--> Local Resources (Tab page)
--> Keyboard (Section)
--> In the combo select "On the remote computer"
I hope this help.

Okay, I'll try that tomorrow. I was looking for a place to configure keyboard hotkeys, but I guess I missed that.
And yes, I have seen in the forum that development is very active, which I think is awesome. I love it when I find a great piece of software that I believe I can help make better, and it has a developer that listens to suggestions. :cool:
Also, just so I don't sound like I'm only finding things wrong, I think you have a very impressive program here. I never would have envisioned wrapping any and all types of remote connections (RDP, VNC, FTP, VPN, etc.) into one management tool. Unfortunately, I'll probably only be using the RDP portion most of the time, mainly because I work at a company where our primary business is hosted applications on Windows terminal servers. A good tool for managing multiple remote desktop windows makes things much easier for me, so I'm happy to help make improvements.
Oh, one more thing. I think you might already be aware of this, but I did find one bug. If I try to create a new RDP session, it won't save the TS Gateway settings. However, if I import an RDP file with TS Gateway settings in place, it will stay enabled. I'm running it on the release candidate of Windows Server 2008 R2 (the server version of Windows 7), in case that makes any difference. It has a newer version of the RDP client, one which has several new features over previous versions, but so far it seems to be working okay, aside from the TS Gateway bug.
Changing that keyboard setting in the RDP config worked. Windows + R now registers in the remote terminal. Thanks for your help!
Hi there,
really nice prog! But i miss:
- left pane -> session-close-option on the context-menu for each host
- possibility to save a putty-password
- possibility to save a vnc-password
for maximizing the space for the embedded window:
- option to diable the session-list on top of the embedded window
- option to disable the buttons on the top-right side
Thanks for this great program!
Peter
