Version 9 database upgrade

I have am still wanting a reply to know if pre version 9 clients can connect to the v9 database if I upgrade it.

this is rather important as a hundred people are being prompted to do the upgrade, but I don't know if I have to get everyone to do the client install simultaneously after the db is upgraded.

I would appreciate a response asap.

current versions are 8.4.x
