PEDM "Run elevated" fails on standalone RDM + Agent 2026.3.0 - is Devolutions Server required?

Hi all,

I'm testing the Devolutions Agent's PEDM elevation feature and want to confirm whether my setup is supported or whether I've misconfigured something.

Setup

  • Remote Desktop Manager (Free) 2026.3.8.0 + Devolutions Agent 2026.3.0.0
  • I also tried Remote Desktop Manager (Free) 2026.3.5.0
  • Windows 11, standalone - no Devolutions Server or Devolutions Cloud
  • Created a PEDM profile in RDM, assigned it to a standard (non-admin) user, selected it in the Devolutions Agent


What happens
Using Run elevated, elevation never completes. C:\ProgramData\Devolutions\Agent\agent.<date>.0.log shows HTTP 400/500:

  • Local Admin method → error=create token
  • Virtual Account method → error=create virtual account token
  • Taskbar Pop-Up Elevation Failed - The parameter is incorrect



Questions

  1. Is PEDM elevation supported on a standalone RDM + Agent install, or does it require Devolutions Server / Devolutions Cloud enrollment?
  2. If standalone is supported, what does the Agent service need configured (e.g. specific privileges) for elevation to succeed?

Hello

I'm not sure you're doing anything wrong, I would need to look into this. However it probably won't be a high priority and I don't recommend this feature for anything more than testing right now.

The PEDM feature is definitely experimental (and I think it's still marked as such in the Agent installer) and essentially unfinished; the goal was to give the ability for administrators to build rules around elevation and support dynamic access requests from users. All of that requires a server-side component (which - to answer your question - isn't required right now). But in the meantime we've been rethinking the feature and are currently approaching it from another angle. You can look for something newer that supersedes what we have here starting with the next major version (which will be 2027.1, in the new year).
