Starting "External Display" RDP sessions in window mode

Starting "External Display" RDP sessions in window mode

avatar

Hi, I am trying to use RDM to manage RDP sessions previously accessed via saved .rdp configs and the Microsoft client. If I configure RDM to use "Display External", the session starts up in the MS client as expected, but always maximised, which is inconvenient when trying to open multiple sessions on the same screen. Both the .rdp configs mentioned and RDM have "smart sizing" enabled.

In the.rdp configs I was using "screen mode id:i:1" to start RDP sessions in window mode. Is there an equivalent config option in RDM to achieve this, i.e. to start up RDP sessions in the MS client in window mode instead of full screen ?

Hello Tony,

Thank you for reaching out!

Could you please try the following and let us know if it works:

  1. Right-click the entry → Properties.
  2. Go to the Display tab.
  3. Set Display to External.
  4. Set remote desktop size to a specific resolution smaller than your monitor (e.g. 1024x768) — set 'screen sizing mode' to default.
  5. Save.

Next time you launch it, mstsc opens in a resizable window instead of maximized, and you can tile several side-by-side.

To make it the default for all new RDP entries: File → Settings → Entry Types → Sessions → Remote Desktop → Display, set Remote desktop size to a fixed resolution there.

If you have further questions, we would be happy to help!

Best regards,
