RDM not passing credentials to the latest OpenVPN community edition.

Resolved

RDM not passing credentials to the latest OpenVPN community edition.

As stated in the subject, starting with OpenVPN version 2.7.2, credentials are no longer being passed from RDM to OpenVPN. Even though the credentials are saved in the RDM VPN object, OpenVPN now prompts the user to enter them manually.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out regarding this matter.

To proceed with our investigation, we require a few additional details. Could you please provide the following information:

  • Number of impacted users
  • Operating system and version
  • Exact version of Remote Desktop Manager (RDM)
  • Whether this is running in a Terminal Server or Citrix environment
  • Type of data source (Local, SQL Server, Devolutions Server, or Hub Business)
  • Devolutions Server version, if applicable
  • Whether the issue occurs with all OpenVPN entries or only specific ones

Additionally, please include:

  • Logs from RDM and/or OpenVPN during the connection attempt
  • Screenshots or a screen recording showing the prompt, or any error
  • Any relevant configuration details (sanitized if necessary)

This information will help us determine whether the issue is related to a change in OpenVPN or something within RDM.

Thank you for your collaboration.

Best regards,

Jacob Lafrenière

Just me, Windows 11 Pro. It started after I updated to OpenVPN Community v2.7.2.

I assume it has something to do with this in the change log but I'm not a developer:
"- when using a config file with inlined username and no password, fix prompting for the password from management interface."

2026.1.19.0 64-bit (PreJIT)
.NET 10.0.7
Local data source (XML), no server. It's just me.
This started when I upgraded to OpenVPN-2.7.3-I001-amd64.msi

Oh wait, I'm sorry, this started when I upgraded to OpenVPN 2.6.20 but they released 2.7.3. I'll be testing that now. might be on their side.

Looks like this might have been on their side.

  • in combination with --management-query-passwords, setups using --auth-user-pass file or inline auth-user-pass would no longer use the configured passwords and prompt on the management interface instead (OpenVPN GUI would then provide an empty user/password prompt) (Github: OpenVPN/openpvn#1021).

All clear, there was a bug in the last version of OpenVPN. You can disregard. Thank you!
