What determines the maximum number of RDP sessions?

What determines that maximum number of simultaneous RDP sessions possible? Is there a built in maxiumum, or is it based upon available memory or some other parameter.

Once I go above 15-20 RDP sessions, it often will not allow me to add more. I have to close RDP Manager completely and start over opening sessions and when each RDP session requireds MFA, that becomes a pain.

Hello geoffrybrown,

Thank you for posting your question.

RDM does not have a fixed built-in maximum number of simultaneous RDP sessions. In most cases, the practical limit is reached due to either:

  • Remote-side limits (Windows edition/RDS configuration/licensing, policies, per-host connection limits), or
  • Client-side resource/stability limits, which can show up sooner when many sessions are opened in Embedded (tabbed) mode, because everything runs inside the RDM process.

Quick isolation test (and usually the best workaround when you need many sessions):

Please let us know if this helps or if you are still running into the same limit after trying External/Undocked mode.

Best regards,
