Samsung S Pen not working on RDP

Samsung S Pen not working on RDP

avatar

Hi there, great app! I use it heavily.

However, there's a major usability issue for me. I am used to using the pen that is included with my Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. But I cannot use it with RDManager on RDP sessions.

Touch events by the pen are simply not recognized and have no effect. Mouse mode and touch mode usingy fingers work normally. I tried various settings without effect.

Samsung S24 Ultra, Android 16

I would love to see support for the S Pen :)
Thanks for considering!

Hello,

Thank you for the report and the kind words about the app!

I tested this on my end with a stylus in an RDP session. While I personally find the pen input a bit finicky compared to finger or mouse input, I wasn’t able to reproduce a bug where the pen is completely ignored.

Could you clarify what you mean by “touch events are not recognized”?
For example:

  • Does the pen not register any click/tap at all inside the RDP session?
  • Or does it register but behave differently than expected (e.g., dragging, right-click, pressure, etc.)?
  • Does the S Pen work normally outside of RDM on the device?

If possible, it would also help if you could tell us:

  • The RDM Android version
  • Whether you are using Touch mode or Mouse mode
  • If the issue occurs with all RDP sessions or only a specific host

This will help us better understand the behavior and investigate further.

Thanks!

Hi Carl,

thanks for your reply. You wrote you're using a Stylus pen which works perfectly on your device. It's interesting that this pen works - but on a technical level they are very different things using very different kinds of hardware and software. I think that it's a general problem with the technique Samsung uses with their Galaxy pens.

Here's what I can provide to clarify it further:

  • The pen does not register any click/tap at all inside the RDP session.
  • The pen works perfectly normal outside the RDP session.
  • In a RDM SSH connection, I can use the pen to e. g. select text.
  • RDM Android Version 2025.3.3.4 (latest in Google Play Store)
  • I tried Touch Mode as well as Mouse Mode with and without the s pen: Normal expected behavior with my finger and no response whatsoever with the s pen.
  • The issue occurred on all RDP sessions on multiple hosts - all running with Ubuntu 24.04 and XFCE Desktop with XRDP 0.9.24

Hello,

Thank you for the additional details that is very helpful.

We have opened an internal bug report so our development team can investigate the S Pen behavior with RDP sessions on Android.

One additional question that could help us narrow this down: do you know if the issue was also present in previous versions of RDM for Android, or did it start appearing after a recent update?

If you happen to remember a version where the S Pen worked correctly (if any), that information would help us identify where the behavior may have changed.

Thanks again for taking the time to report this and provide detailed feedback!

Best regards,

Carl Marien

I've been using RDM for more than a year but I didn't track what version I began with. Not sure if it ever worked with rdm.

My impression is thsg its
a general problem with captueing the input of the s pen g
i cannot .

Hello,

Thank you for the clarification, I understand what you mean now.

Based on your description, it does indeed look like the S Pen input is being handled differently than a standard stylus or finger input. The fact that it works in SSH sessions and outside RDM but produces no events in RDP sessions is very useful information for our investigation.

I’ve added these details to the internal ticket so our development team can look specifically at how Samsung S Pen events are captured and passed to the RDP component on Android.

We’ll update the ticket as soon as we have more information from the developers.

Thank you again for taking the time to report this and provide detailed testing.

Best regards,

Carl Marien
