I normally have about 15 sessions open, and then add five or 10 during the day as tasks arise. When I close one of those daily task sessions it's never clear to me which session will get focus. It seems to jump around and sometimes it even jumps to an entry that's not open. It's confusing and a little disorienting to have to figure out where I am every time I close a session. Is there a way to set this behavior? What is the actual way RDM decides what session gets focused when a session is closed? I would prefer it to return to the last session that had focus before selecting the one I close. Thanks for any info you can provide!
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out regarding this issue.
I tested the behavior and noticed that it’s quite inconsistent, sometimes switching between sessions unexpectedly. I understand that, especially with multiple sessions open, this can be frustrating.
I’ll discuss this with the development team to determine whether this behavior is intentional or if changes are needed. I’ll keep you informed on the outcome.
As of now, I don’t believe this behavior can be configured, but I’ll confirm and update you on that as well.
Thank you for your patience.
Best regards,
Jacob Lafrenière
Glad you're on the case, Jacob - thanks for any info you can provide...
Hello,
We currently already have an option to set the behavior when a tab is closed. You can find it in File - Settings - User interface - Dashboard - When closing session. I can break down the current behavior for you so it makes sense. Note that this setting only handles what happens when you close the tab that is currently focused/activated. Closing a tab different than the currently active one should retain focus, and not change the designed tab.
It is possible that certain session types force handle focus under certain cases, (I know for instance that Windows Terminal can be used to launch certain applications that might forcefully take back focus under certain circumstances), but those are outliers. If you experience anything that specific, you can let us know, and we can investigate to see if we can fix the problem.
Please let me know if your current experience aligns with what I've explained, in the case where it doesn't, a clear specification of the layout in question so we can replicate the issue will likely be necessary for us to find the problem.

I see why I find this confusing then. I really don't use the tabs to navigate, I use the Nav Pane tree, because the tabs are often in a chaotic order based on opens and closes, in the Nav Pane things stay in the order I set. What would really make sense to me is a third option, "last tab with focus". That said, I don't even have the option you're describing in my settings, and I normally don't have the Dashboard Tab displayed. See attached screenshot - my options screen lacks this section. I'm running version 2025.3.30.0 64-bit (PreJIT). Thanks for any info you can provide!
RDM No Closing Session option.png
Hello,
You're right, I missed that this option was about to be released with the upcoming 2026.1 version. I'll open a ticket to investigate the possibility to add a "Last tab focused" in the option as a selection, and we will update you when we have more information.
Regards,
Jafran Majeau
Hello again,
I've taken the liberty of implenting this immediately. I've added the Last focused tab selection to the dropdown menu I presented in my first screenshot. This will effectively change the focus to the last focused tab when closing the active tab.
You can expect this option with the upcoming 2026.1 version.

Jafran Majeau
Amazing! Looking forward to the new version - thanks!
Hello,
Thank you for being so patient!
I'm pleased to inform you that a new version of RDM (2026.1.9.0) has been released, featuring the fix for your issue.
Latest Version: Download RDM
Please let us know if this works or if you encounter any issues.
Best regards,
Maxim Robert
Hi Maxim and Jafran:
I downloaded the update - testing reveals this behavior on my system:
When Closing Session pop up menu now appears, and I have set it to "Last Focused Tab"
Closing a tab returns to the first session opened since starting the program or since all sessions were closed, not the last focused tab.
In other words, if I have no open sessions, and open Sessions A B and C in that order, then select session B and close it, it returns to Session A, not C.
This is repeatable across program restarts.
Let me know if I can help debug...
Hello,
I haven't been able to replicate this issue. Could you please share with us which entry types you are specifically using when getting this problem? (ex: RDP, SSH, etc) Or does this replicate with all entry types? I've just tested with "Last focused tab", launched 3 different entries, and everything works as intended (as last session launched was C, and I switched to B, closed B, and it went back to C).
There is a possibility that specific entry types have odd focus interaction when closed, and might need additional handling.
Regards,
Jafran Majeau
This is repeatable for me, and only with RDP sessions and with Edge/Chrome or ARD sessions in the mix too. It always returns to the first session opened since program launch or all sessions closed. This behavior now occurs no matter what choice I have made in the Settings, Dashboard, When closing session pop-up - even if select the next tab is chosen.
Happy to do a screen share if it helps...
Hello,
I attempted to reach you via email to schedule a remote session regarding the issue you reported. Please let me know your availability so we can connect and investigate the problem together.

Just scheduled - thanks!
