I am having a strange issue with RDM when connected to Windows servers (using "FreeRDP (latest)"). If I try to copy text (either with Ctrl-C or right-click/copy from the context menu), 9 out of 10 times RDM will completely freeze and stop responding. I have to kill the process through Task Manager on my laptop and then start it again and re-open all of my connections.
What could be causing this?
Hello
Sorry for the inconvenience.
I just tried it on my side and found it to work well, so something else must be going on here. The next time it happens, can you follow this KB article to create a mini dump of the frozen state? As per the article, once you have that, don't post it here - let me know and I'll have our support team give you a secure method to upload it.
Also, is this when copying on the client or the server? Or both? And what are you copying (text, files, images); or it doesn't make a difference?
Finally, I hate to answer a question with a question, but is there a need to use FreeRDP? I'm curious why you are using it over MS RDP on Windows.
Thanks and kind regards,
Richard Markievicz
Thanks, Richard. I'll reproduce and grab the dump file.
Mostly I am trying to copy text on the remote Windows server when this occurs. I'll do some more testing to see if it also happens when trying to copy files.
And I switched to FreeRDP a few months ago on your suggestion to work around a different issue I was having where I could not connect to more than one session at a time and you recommended I try a different back-end:

Maybe I should try going back to MS RDP, I'll try that too.
Hi Jeremy
Aha, sorry for not remembering! Well - hold off on the dump file - I've managed to reproduce something similar to what you describe and I'm looking into it. I will be back with more information.
Thanks and kind regards,
Richard Markievicz
No worries, I'm not the only person here, I don't expect you to remember every problem I have. :) If you need anything else let me know, and thanks for looking into it!
I did go ahead and generate dump file too if you want it.
Hello again
I've a pretty good idea what's going on here and I'm working on a fix.
In the meantime - do you use the clipboard history function on your local machine (the one running RDM)? Or a third-party clipboard manager?
You could try to mitigate this by turning it off - at least, temporarily, and let me know if the problem goes away. For the Windows built-in one, it's in (Windows) Settings > System > Clipboard > Clipboard History.
Essentially, I've found a timing dependent bug (meaning most users would never hit it, but some might hit it often) where copying from the server can cause us to freeze, and the chance of hitting that is greatly increased by using a clipboard history manager on the local machine.
Regardless, I'll aim to deliver a fix in 2025.2.28. In the meantime please keep hold of your .dmp file in case your problem turns out to be something else.
Thanks and kind regards,
Richard Markievicz
I have Clipboard History turned off (Windows 11 laptop) but I do run AutoHotKey v2 which I think might have some hooks into the clipboard. That's a great find and such a quick turnaround, thank you!
Hello
Thanks a lot for your patience. I don't know about AutoHotKey, but it sounds likely. If you still get a problem after updating to 2025.8.28 (shouldn't be long before it's released), please do come back here and let me know and I will take a second look.
Thanks again and kind regards,
Richard Markievicz
