Is It Safe to Use Stag VPN with Remote Desktop Manager?

avatar

Hi everyone,
I’ve started using Stag VPN on my Android and desktop devices to secure my internet activity, especially while managing remote sessions. However, I’m curious—could a VPN interfere with Remote Desktop Manager connectivity, or are there any known issues with performance or authentication when a VPN is active?
Would love to hear from others who’ve tried using RDM while connected through a VPN. Any tips or warnings?
Thanks!

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out!
My name is William, and I’m here to assist you in any way I can.

Using a VPN with Remote Desktop Manager (RDM) can sometimes interfere with remote connections or access to your data source, depending on how your VPN is configured.

I recommend verifying the following:

  • Ensure that your Data Source remains accessible while connected to the VPN.
  • If your remote session targets (e.g., RDP, SSH) are on your local network, it may be beneficial to bypass the VPN for local traffic, depending on your VPN client’s split tunnelling settings.

While VPN configurations are not my area of expertise, the key is to maintain direct connectivity to both your data source and target machines. If those are reachable, RDM should function as expected.

If you are looking to use your VPN to access remote machines, you can configure your VPNs directly in RDM and link them to your desired entries using the VPN/Tunnel/Gateway tab in the entry properties.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

Best regards,

Thank you, William!
Your explanation was very helpful. I’ll check the VPN settings and ensure my data sources and remote targets remain accessible. Appreciate the tip about configuring VPN directly in RDM — I’ll give it a try!
Best regards.

Hello,

You are welcome, I just remember that integrating VPN in remote session was covered in our RDM YouTube video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtSlp_TVAxE&t=920s
