FreeRDP with 2025.1

avatar

Good day,

Since we updated to 2025.1 we are no longer able to use RDP with FreeRDP. The program crashes with an error:

Application: RemoteDesktopManager.exe
CoreCLR Version: 9.0.325.11113
.NET Version: 9.0.3
Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception.

We have only a few connections where we need to use FreeRDP, but would be nice if that can be solved.

Thank you.

Best regards
Michael

Hi Michael

I'm sorry for the inconvenience. Can I know exactly which version of RDM 2025.1 you have? When does the crash happen, immediately when you open the connection or at another time?

Thanks and kind regards,

Richard Markievicz

Hi Richard,

Thanks for your quick response. We are using version "2025.1.27.0 64-bit" and the it crashed immediately after trying to open the session.

Hi Michael

Thanks. Ok, so we had an update in that version for FreeRDP and some of its dependencies. Notably we switched the TLS backend from OpenSSL to libreSSL. However I haven't had any other reports of problems, but I do suspect this is related - I assume this was working before you updated to .27? Or have you had the same problem on earlier versions of 2025.1?

A couple of things that might help me are to know:

  • what version of Windows you're running RDM on? Is it a physical or virtual machine?
  • are there any corresponding errors in the event log?

If you could try generating a session log for me it might show the reason.

  1. In Settings > Entry Types > Sessions > Remote Desktop (RDP), under "Logging"
  2. Check the box to enable logging and provide a path to create the log file
  3. Save the changes, and then relaunch RDM
  4. Reproduce the problem. You should have a log file that you can send to me by PM or to service@devolutions.net, mentioning this forum thread
  5. Disable logging again as it has a non-zero performance impact.

Please let me know if something isn't clear

Kind regards

Hi Richard,

I have sent the logs to you. The error happens on physical Windows 11 as well as on VM with "Windows Server 2022".

Hope that helps.

Hi Michael

Thanks for that. This looks like a regression on the FreeRDP side. I'm looking into it.

Can you confirm that you're connecting through an RD Gateway?

Thanks for your patience,

Richard Markievicz

Yes, connecting through an RD Gateway. It works ok with RDM version 2024.3.29.0 which we have used prior to the update.

Hello Michael

Thanks. I've reproduced the problem and I'm working on fixing that. Sorry for the inconvenience. I'll write back here once I know something more.

Hello Michael

I've opened a ticket to address this and I'm working on that. This is caused by the switch to libreSSL. In the meantime I'm afraid I don't have a workaround other than to use a previous version of RDM. I believe anything <= 2025.1.26 should be ok.

Thanks again,

Richard Markievicz

Hi Richard,

Ok, not a big problem here at the moment, so we can wait a while...

Thank you very much so far.

Hello

I've fixed this issue and that will be available in the 2025.1.30 update. Sorry again for the regression.

I've noticed another issue related to the RPC transport for RD Gateway with FreeRDP; I'm not sure if it's a protocol problem or something with the terminal server licensing in our environment. I've decided to investigate that separately since based on your log file, I don't think it's a problem for you. But all that to say; if you experience further issues once you get the update, please let me know. That should be released within the next couple of weeks.

Kind regards,
