Mac: Copy multiple files to and from remote desktop on Windows Server

avatar

Hi,
On Windows, I can open a folder in File Explorer, select multiple files, press CTRL-C, switch to Remote Desktop Manager connected to a Windows Server, navigate to a folder there, and press CTRL-V to copy the files over. However, when I try the same process on a Mac, only one of the selected files is copied. The same issue occurs when copying multiple files from the Windows Server to my Mac—only one file is transferred.

I have tried a few searches to find any information on this. Am I missing something about copying multiple files to and from a Remote Desktop on a Mac?

I’m running RDM 2024.2.9.2 on macOS 14.6.1 (23G93).

Kind regards,
Anders

Hello

You're not missing anything - currently only a single file can be transferred by the clipboard in one operation.

There's not really a reason for this - server-to-client file copies on Mac are a little bit tricky due to the way the OS handles pasting files in the Finder that don't exist on disk yet, and transferring a file list added some extra complexity which we didn't tackle when we implemented the feature.

I do agree that this is useful, though; and you're not the first person to ask about it. There's already a ticket open here so I'll try to raise the priority of that and update this post once I have some news.

In the meantime, please don't hesitate with further questions or comments

As an aside, I'm going to get your post moved to the Mac section of the forum, since this relates specifically to RDM Mac.

If it helps what I do is map a local mac folder to a drive in windows via local resources-hardrives-specific folder then you can pass multiple files back and forth

Hello

Thanks for the feedback.

Indeed, if mapping a drive is tenable in your environment, the performance will also be much better than using the clipboard.

I haven't forgotten the original ticket here and I'm trying to find time to prioritize this internally.

Thanks for your patience

Thank you for the suggestion of a mapped drive. Not always avilable for me (customer servers) but on our internal servers no problem. However, I usually only have to copy 5-10 files that are less than 1 MB in total, so copy-paste world be the fastest way to do it.

It's not a major issue for me just a minor annoyance when it's 10 files.

Hello

A small update; I've submitted a fix for this to the RDM Mac team. I'm not sure exactly when that will land in a release, it seems like it might miss the 2024.3 release which is imminent but it should at least arrive shortly afterwards. We'll update this forum post once that is available.

In the meantime, please don't hesitate with further questions or comments
