global shortcuts not working globally

Hello,

since I haven't found an answer to this question, maybe you can help me out. The 'Quick Search' feature is a pretty nice one and I already set a global shortcut to use this, the issue I have is that this shortcut doesn't work anymore when following settings are configured:

User interface / Taskbar/trayicon:
Show in taskbar: When not minimized / Never visible / When not closed

The reason I don't want to have the actual application in the taskbar is that I actually use multiple desktops in Windows and there are some issues for that usecase when using the Remote Desktop Manager. I can get into detail on this topic (and probably open another topic for this), but right now it would be great to have an actual global shortcut that works as long as the application is running in the system tray.

Patrick

Hello,

What version of Remote Desktop Manager are you currently using? Also, what type of data source do you have?

Hello Etienne,

currently I am using Remote Desktop Manager version 2024.2.15.0 64-bit. I'm using two different data source types, one is Microsoft SQL Server (which is a global collection of automatically generated connections) and my local data source is SQLite. This is the one I am currently using for the most part.

Edit: just to clarify, when I say "it's not working" I mean that the quick search overlay is just not showing up when using the defined global shortcut. When the overlay is showing up it works just fine.

Hello Patrick,

Thank you for your reply,

To clarify, to clarify the shortcut is not working when the application is Minimized or does it not work when the application is in focus for you?

Let me know,

Best regards,

Hello Samuel,

the shortcut isn't working working when the applictation is minimized.

The idea was to get a better experience with RDM when using multiple desktops in Windows. Just to clarify the reason behind this request, because maybe the underlying issue is another one:

Multiple desktops work pretty well with using right-click on tray icon and manually choose the connections (application is minimized to tray all the time). When the application is not running in any taskbar on any desktop a connection is always opened on the current desktop, which would be the expected behaviour in every case imo. This just does not work as expected when the application is running on a desktop in the taskbar, because in that situation any new connection is going to be established on exactly that desktop and not the one I currently work on.

It would be great to have the possibility to open connections without the application running in the taskbar at all, e.g. by a shortcut like the global search (or the option to minimize the application automatically to tray after a connection is established. Right now using the search UI opens the application on current desktop, opens the connections as its configured in the connection properties, and lets the application stay in the taskbar.

Maybe I missed a setting to make the multiple desktop experience better though... hope the explanation is clear enough to point out the issue with multiple desktops.

Hello Patrick

I see, would the option "Minimize on Open session (External)" which you can find under "File" -> "Options" -> "Types" be what you're looking for in this case? Could you give it a try and let me know if this helps?

Hello Samuel,

thanks for the suggestion. I tested that option now, I just can't recognize any different behaviour with this setting being turned on. Just as additional information, I configured the option of my sessions the following:

Display: Undocked, Monitor #2, Current Desktop

If I use the systray context menu "Quick Search" to open a connection the application still opens as window and runs in the taskbar, the connection is established and the application is not minimized after that (if that's even the expected behaviour).

If I use the systray context menu and manually select the session, the connection is established without the application ever being opened (which would be the behaviour I would be looking for when using Quick Search).

Patrick

EDIT: oh FYI I just re-set the global shortcut for the Quick Search function and now its working as intended, even when the application is closed to system tray. No idea why this did not work initially, so that initial issue seems to be solved. Probably a classical layer 8 problem on my end... so the only behaviour that's stopping an enjoyable multi desktop usage for me now is that the application stays opened when I establish the connection via quick search.

Hello Patrick,

Thank you for your reply,

I see, glad to hear this is now working for you! For the option I mentioned to work, you would need to have the "Display" field in your entry "Properties" set to "External" instead of 'Undocked"

Let me know if this helps,

Hello Samuel,

seems like the option "External" is not available for the connection types "SSH over Delinea Secret Server Proxy" and "RDP over Delinea Secret Server Proxy", which are the ones I am using.

Hello Patrick,

Thank you for your reply,

I see, I would need to discuss this with our development to confirm if the same option would be possible for Undocked sessions,

I will get back to you regarding this,

Hello Patrick,

Thank you for your patience,

Following a discussion with our development team, I've converted this to a feature request. This will allow us to look for additional feedback from other users.

Hello Samuel,

thanks for considering the feature request. I assume it would be helpful to change the title of the post because at this point the feature request has probably not much in common with the global shortcut question I had in the beginning. Feel free to tweak the title as you think it is suitable for the feature request.

Best,
Patrick
