RDP: user gets prompted for password every time

avatar

hi,
we have one user that gets prompted to enter the password on every RDP connection he tries to open.

We have reset the RDM settings - thus I assume it has to be something windows specific and hope someone around here can push me into the right direction of where to look for.

The client is a Windows 11 machine - we checked various group policies (gpedit) to see if the user tinkered around somewhere - but all RDP-related settings are "not set".

I double-checked that there are no user- or local-specific settings set.

What's curious: we did overwrite one entry with user-specific settings and entered a random username and password. The username is displayed when the password is asked for; and also the dialog does not state "the password is wrong" but rather "please enter a password" as if the password does not - for some reason gets transferred to the mstsc?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to us regarding this,

Could you please specify the version of RDM you are currently using?
What type of data source are you using?

That being said, that is indeed odd, is this the only user encountering this issue? You mentioned MSTSC are the sessions being opened in "External" mode?

Let me know,

Best regards,

hi Samuel,
the version is 2024.1.29.0 64-bit
the datasource type Devolutions Server

I mentioned MSTSC because I know this dialog when using it.

We tried both embedded and external mode - same behaviour.

This is the only user expierencing this issue; also it must be related somehow to the client as on our terminal servers the connections open up just fine.

Hello Guenther,

Thank you for your reply,

You're correct this prompt is not from RDM, does the user encounter the same behavior with a portable instance? To test this, you will need to do the following:

1- Download the .zip file below:
https://remotedesktopmanager.com/home/thankyou/rdmbin
2- Create a new folder on your Desktop
3- Extract the content of the .zip file into the folder created at #2
4- Go to this folder once the .zip file has been extracted and run remotedesktopmanager.exe
5- Connect to your data source

Let me know,

Best regards,

Samuel Dery

it's the same behaviour with that portable instance.

Hello Guenther,

Thank you for your reply,

I see, could you have a look into your Window Credential Manager to see if there are any saved credentials for this specific host?

Let me know,

Best regards,

hi Samuel,
we tested with several hosts, all the same behaviour; nothing to see in Windows Credential Manager.

We also tested creating an RDP session an check the box "save creds" and saved that configuration to an .rdp-file.
Opening it the second time the credentials where asked again.

The last resort will be to reset the Laptop (as I assume it is some setting somewhere in Windows which we did not find yet).

Hello Guenther,

Since you got the behaviour also outside from RDM I assume this issue must be located at OS level.

I know you mentioned the verification of the GPO's but I'm wondering if you get another behaviour if you change the following explicit to Disabled
gpedit.msc => Administrative Templates => Windows Components => Remote Desktop Services => Remote Desktop Connection Client.=> Prompt for credentials on the client computer and Do not allow passwords to be saved

I would also recommend to verify with gpresult /r if perhaps an additional or other group policy is linked and applied to the affected client.

Regards,
