How-to setup Windows Key for VNC in RDMAN

avatar

Good afternoon,

I am using the RDMAN Software Version: 2024.1.25.0 64-bit

I mostly use VNC and the devices I connect to have software that runs in the foreground and I cannot access the taskbar or get into any of the programs without being able to press the Windows Key.
I cannot figure out how to do a Windows Key Press to bring up the "Start" menu.

I went into Advance on the entry and set "Apply Windows Key combinations" to Remote computer, but I have no idea what button combinations to press to make the "Start" menu appear.

Any help on this would be very much appreciated.

Thank you.

Kind regards,

Hello Chuck

I just made a quick test with a TightVNC server and the Windows key worked "out of the box" without needing to adjust any settings.

Do you know the type and version of VNC server that is running on the devices you connect to? It would help to try and reproduce the issue.

Please let me know if something isn't clear or you have questions

Kind regards,

Hello Richard,

Yes, you seem to be right.
This is based on the version of VNC installed.

This specific device I was testing is using some old version of Ultra VNC.
I am unable to figure out the version right now as I can't access anything on the device, but when I was at the shop earlier I had to change the admin password on it and I noticed it was a pretty old version of Ultra.

Thank you!

Hello again Chuck

Thanks for the info. If you can find out what the troublesome version of Ultra is, we should be able to either fix this or suggest a workaround. Get back to me once you know.

In the meantime, if you have other questions or comments, please don't hesitate to post back.

Kind regards,

Hello Richard,

Thank you for the reply again.
I will try and get back to you on this next week,

I have one other question since you said you tested with TightVNC. I might be doing something wrong, but I would say 98% of my computers are running TightVNC Server.
When I connect to them I cannot do file transfer.

I tried the FreeVNC and the UltraVNC options.
I see that if I am running UltraVNC Server the file transfer option does work.

Is there a workaround to get machines with TightVNC to work?

Thanks again!

Hello Chuck

The short answer is: it's not supported (currently).

File transfer is not part of the RFB (VNC) protocol and every vendor that includes it uses their own proprietary extensions (which are, of course, not compatible with other vendor's server/client implementations).

We have an implementation of UltraVNCs extensions in our VNC client (FreeVNC), but not TightVNC. This is a request that comes up occasionally; I'll add your feedback to the relevant ticket and that will help us to prioritize this feature. We'll also be able to circle back to this thread and notify you once that is available.

In the meantime I'm afraid I don't have a workaround other than: (1) use UltraVNC (2) use TightVNC embedded but a different mechanism for file transfer (3) use TightVNC in external mode. I'm sorry that none of those are ideal currently.

Please let me know any other questions or comments
