Use KeePass Database (kdbx) with RDM

Use KeePass Database (kdbx) with RDM

avatar

Hi,

I'm using KeePass for private purposes and at work we just got RDM. Now I wonder what's the best or easiest way to use my KeePass Database in RDM. I installed KeePass Addon and so far I was able to add single entries via "Add entry" or import multiple entries via "Import Logins from KeePass (link)". These two ways only work for import to the enterprise data source (internal Devolutions server), but not for a local data source (sqlite).

Obviously I don't want to import every single entry by entry, so sth. like the second method would be the way to go for me. But in addition to the first problem though I select "Direct" Mode at the import dialogue all imported login credentials have set "Plugin" mode after import.

Or is there a completely different way to go to achieve my goals anyway?

Thank you in advance!

Hello Balduccio,

Thank you for reaching out. Here are some steps on how to get started:

  1. Open RDM, then navigate to File -> Data Sources.
  2. Click on ‘Add’ to create a new data source. Choose SQLite if you prefer to keep your data local.
  3. After setting up the data source, it’s time to import your KeePass database. Select the data source in the tree view, then head to File -> Import -> KeePass.
  4. During the import wizard, make sure the target data source is the SQLite database you just set up or selected, and then proceed with the import.

If the entries don’t import correctly, double-check the settings in both KeePass and RDM to ensure compatibility. Also, make sure the KeePass plugin or add-on for RDM is up to date.

If you have any more questions or need further assistance, please don't hesitate to get in touch. We’re here to help!

Hello Maxim,

thank you very much for your reply. When I switch to local data source the only import options for KeePass I see is csv and xml, and I'd rather stick to the encrypted kdbx to be honest. During the import wizard I don't see an option to change the data source where the passwords should be imported to, I have to select it in advance in the navigation pane.

Hello Balduccio,

Thank you for the additional details!

Unfortunately, importing a .kdbx file into RDM is not possible when connected to the Devolutions Server. However, you can add a KeePass credentials entry and set it to "Always prompt with list" as an alternative to creating an individual entry for each credential. This option is unavailable with SQLite, as the KeePass credentials entry feature is not supported.

Also, could you provide us with a recording of the behaviours with the direct mode at the import dialogue?

I will send you the link to share the file with us in a direct message. This will allow us to investigate further and try to reproduce the issue.

Thank you for your collaboration. If you have any other questions, feel free to let us know.

Best regards,

Maxim Robert

Hi Maxim,

thank you for your suggestion, so far this one looks best suited for my purposes. Still I sent the files so you can have a look at it, whether there is a bug or I did something wrong. But when it's not possible to import to a local data source anyway, it's not really an option for me.

Hello Balduccio,

Thank you for your response!

If you enter your RDM License in RDM, even if you are using an SQLite, you could have access to the KeePass credentials entry and set it to "Always prompt with list" instead of creating an entry for each credential. Unfortunately, importing a .kdbx file into RDM is still not possible.

Please let me know if that would be possible on your end. If you have any other questions, feel free to let us know.

Hello Maxim,

thank you for the additional recommendation. I will also try this one, if our IT department hands out the license. But I think when not storing the KeePass key and set it to "Always prompt with list", I'm fine with the User Vault at the enterprise database, too.
