Can the Navigation pane unhide by clicking anywhere on the bar?

Hi,

I'm testing out using the AutoHide feature for the Navigation pane to give me more screen space for my RDP sessions. It works great, but then I noticed that it also hides the buttons under the Nav pane for vault, opened, favorites, recent, etc. The only way to show the Nav pane it is to click on the word "Navigation" at the top of the screen. This means I have to click at the far top left of the screen to show the pane, then the far bottom left of my screen to switch to Favorites, then back at the top of the screen to actually click the item I want.

Is there any way to make it so that I can click anywhere on the blank, vertical bar to have it pop out instead of having to click the word at the top? Then I could just click right by where the buttons would be, near the bottom left, and have them pop out right where my mouse already is.

Thanks.

Hi,

Thank you for your suggestion regarding the AutoHide feature for the Navigation pane. I appreciate the detailed explanation of how you would like the functionality to work to improve your workflow.

After looking into the possibilities with our third-party provider, it seems that currently there's no way to modify the AutoHide behavior to allow clicking anywhere on the vertical bar to expand it. However, your suggestion is indeed valuable, and I have added it to our watch list for consideration in future updates.

Assuming it is somehow linked to the text "Navigation", is there any way to change that to add a whole bunch of tabs or spaces to the end so the word actually fills up the entire column? Or maybe add a second "Navigation" word down at the bottom that would also be clickable?

Just brainstorming.

Thanks.

Hello,
Unfortunately, it is not possible to customize the content, but I have found a hack (it's not that bad), and I will give it a try to ensure it does not cause unexpected side effects. I'm confident that I have found a method to do exactly what you wanted.

Based on your video, it looks like that's what I'm hoping for. I'm fine with a "hack". Let me know when you have instructions ready and I'll be happy to give it a try.

Great!
Finally, one of my coworkers has found a solution to my workaround. This change will be in RDM 2024.2, planned for late June.

Awesome. Thanks for the update.

I just installed 2024.2.8.0 but I still have to click on the word Navigation to unhide the pane. Did it not make it in this version or is there a setting I need to change or something like that?

Thanks.

Hello,
This is strange since it works for me. Here is a small video.

Could you provide me with a video as well? By the way, it's based on a hack, so I must be missing a case.

Well yeah. In your video, you appear to be clicking the word Navigation in order to get the pane to pop out. I'm asking to be able to click anywhere in the vertical bar where the word Navigation is to have the pane pop out. In my OP, I want to be able to click anywhere in the yellow area to have the pane open. I don't want to always have to click right directly on the word "Navigation".

Thanks.

Hello,
I only implemented half of your request. When you click outside of the tab page, I collapse it, but it does not expand. The reason is that I don't know which tab to expand when you have more than one. I could try to expand the last one, which means that if you only have one, it will work very well. I'm not sure if it's possible, but I will give it a try.

I wasn't suggesting to change what happens when you click on NAvigation. It seems that it just opens up to whichever tab I had open before (Vault, Favorites, etc). I was just hoping that clicking anywhere one the vertical bar would initiate the pane popping open, exactly like it does currently when you click the word Navigation.

Not a big deal if it can't be done. Would just be a QoL feature.

Thanks for looking into it.

Hello,
This should be in RDM 2024.2.13 but it works well only if you only have the navigation pane in auto hide which is your case. I does not work in you have more than one tab page grouped and in auto hide.

Just found out the new version came out so upgraded to 2.14. Clicking anywhere on the Navigation bar now pops open the panel perfectly. Thanks for making the update.
