RDM "freezing" during normal use

To clarify, what type of changes are you referring to? I've done some tests on my end by modifying the entry Properties but I have not encountered the same behavior.

Would it be possible for you to create a portable installation of the latest version of RDM and see if this issue still occurs? To do so, you will need to do the following:

1- Download the .zip file below:
https://remotedesktopmanager.com/home/thankyou/rdmbin
2- Create a new folder on your Desktop
3- Extract the content of the .zip file into the folder created at #2
4- Go to this folder once the .zip file has been extracted and run remotedesktopmanager.exe
5- Connect to your data source

It could be anything as simple as just moving from one entry to another, after adding a new entry, after modifying an existing entry, etc. It freezes anywhere from 10 - 30 seconds.

I will get that portable version completed by EOB tomorrow and let you know the results.

This seems to have resulted in better performance.

It's just weird that it worked perfectly fine all the way up to 2024.1.12.0. After that, we have been experiencing issues.

I spoke a bit too soon.

I checked the Application Logs, and there are 191 entries for today.

I utilized the "Send To Support" option, and asked they be forwarded to you for this topic.

I'm investigating this issue. While I look over your log file. Would it be possible for you to open the Profiler and set the Profiler level = 1, Auto clear unchecked & Timestamp checked

Perform a few slow operations then send us the profiler trace?

For others reading this thread.

The trace very clearly identified the culprit, we are able to reproduce the issue internally and hope to able to resolve this relatively quickly.

As for a possible workaround, while RDM is frozen, press CTRL + ALT + SHIFT for 2-3 seconds and RDM should unfreeze (it kicks out of the wait loop).

I just saw your DM as well.

Interesting that the "offline" function was relevant. Whenever you exit RDM, it always freezes on something to the affect of "writing offline file" on the bottom right.

Especially since you mention SQLite doesn't utilize offline files.

For me, this issue still happens, and I am on version 2024.1.28, where throughout the day, the app freezes doing just general things mentioned in this thread, like changing from one folder to another or after editing an entry, etc.

How can we address this and get it resolved?

I have been experiencing this issue again since a few weeks ago; I am using version 2024.2.16.0.

Freezing on startup or while using the app?

This is still a really bad problem even in 2024.2.16. Sometimes RDM crashes on startup and I have to launch it a second time. Then while working I will connect to one RDP session and then moving to another one the app freezes or changing selections, etc.

It has been constant today and a real problem to work.

When this issue occurs, could you check the Application logs and send the result?
Also, could you check if this is a silent error, an error, or an info one?

Would it be possible, while RDM is frozen, for you to follow the steps outline here. This will create a dump file so that we can try to analyze the reason for the freeze.

I will try this the next time I am using the application and it freezes. I will post back once that happens with the dump file.

I had the issue come up just now and created the mini-dump. See attached. (file deleted)

From the dump, while I continue my investigation, it looks like you are doing a move action at the time of the freeze. Is this the case? If so you should have a pop-up dialog somewhere waiting for input. Could it be in the background somewhere (not top most)?

I was trying to move an entry to another folder yes but did not see a dialog anywhere come up. The program locks and I cannot do anything.

It also happens when navigating, etc.

For the move, I'm assuming you right-clicked in the tree view > Move?

For now, I've changed the select folder form to show in the Windows taskbar while we investigate.

Instead of having to kill the app you can select the form from the taskbar and complete the action.

If you can do the same with the navigation, it would also help.

Yes I did do a right-click > Move function when it froze this time. Most times it is just navigating or trying to edit connections, changing from one server to another, even maximizing the window it gets stuck at times too. Overall a very bad experience which might make me switch apps possibly if it cannot be fixed.

@cchilderhose - if you could keep on sending me a mini-dump of each situation as you freeze that would be helpful the the diagnostic process. Thanks

You can also try a few things like, enabling "No internet connection" in File > Settings > Advanced, this might help.

I tried using the Process Explorer from SysInternals, but the Remote Desktop Manager process does not show in the process list. Even if I run the Process Explorer as Administrator... So I can't send you the Mini-Dump

Yeah, today has not been good for me either. I was very happy using Remote Desktop Manager until a couple of months ago when all these strange lockups started to appear.

I am not yet at the point of stopping using the product, but I have to confess that I already googled alternatives to it.

Can you please try the following? It might be a long shot but worth a try. We've seen a client in the past having the same'ish issue and in his case he had configure his default template path to an IP but the machine was down/dead so every time RDM tried to access the path, RDM would freeze waiting for the IO.

Help > Profiler > set the profiler level = 2097153. Now wait for RDM to freeze and have a look at the profiler. Any entries that start with FileManager or File with long (ms) results? If so send us the profiler trace(s).

This is odd, can you try finding the app using the Find Window's Process (icon/tool)?

Click & drag the icon and drop it onto RDM and release. This should find the RDM process for you.

Can you please try setting the Wait progress mode = Status bar or None to see if RDM freezes less?

We've had issues with the wait progress windows and from the dump files we received this could be part of the issue.

OK, trying this. Tonight I have a long support session with a customer, I will let you know how it goes.

I changed the Wait Progress Mode to Status Bar. Let's see what happens as it has been freezing again today. If that does not help will set and try None.

RDM freezes again after I set the Wait Progress to none and do all the other things the support recommended. I sent an email to support.

I'm now trying to use MSRDC and I have the Microsoft Remote Desktop App installed in my computer, but if I try to start a session from RDM configured to use MSRDC I gett this error message:

Just upgraded to 2024.1.19.0 and RDM keeps "freezing" after any kind of change to anything on the SQLite DataSource.

I am getting the same reaction on three machines that are using the latest version.

My main laptop
1 Jump Server
My VM that is connected to a completely different network with no internet access per client policy.

I also have two colleagues using the software who are on 2024.1.17.0 and are having the same exact issue.

My issues seems to have disappeared after I moved from the Windows Insider Dev channel to Beta. Not sure why and I also have the 2025 version of RDM.

Also, could you be more specific on this issue:
What is the behaviour?
How many minutes did you wait until you closed RDM?
What session is active when this issue occurs?

As mentioned, the insider build is not supported and has been proven to create issues in RDM.
Moving from insider to beta was a good choice (regarding our product).
