Two bugs - Window layout and smart folders

Issue #1:

Window layout does not persist. Every time I launch RDM I have to reset the window layout in order to get the quick launch, navigation panel, search bar, etc.. to appear.

Issue #2:

Smart folders no longer return results. Double clicking on the folder does nothing. I can edit the properties and change the entry name and/or add tags but it doesn't do anything.

Issue #1 has been present for me for at least the last three version of RDM. Issue #2 I did not discover until today.

I am running RDM 2023.3.39.0, using DPS as the data source (release 2023.3.14.0).

Could you confirm if you encounter the same issue with a portable version of RDM?

To do so, you will need to do the following:

1- Download the .zip file below:
https://remotedesktopmanager.com/home/thankyou/rdmbin
2- Create a new folder on your Desktop
3- Extract the content of the .zip file into the folder created at #2
4- Go to this folder once the .zip file has been extracted and run remotedesktopmanager.exe
5- Connect to your data source

I tested the portable version this morning and did not experience the same issues.  The window layout persists as expected and smart folders are populating the matching sessions.

I assume this means my local install is corrupt in some fashion.  Are there any particular steps I should follow if I want to fully remove the client and reinstall it?

To address your concern, we will reset the configuration of the Remote Desktop Manager. Please follow the steps given below to reset it:

1. Close Remote Desktop Manager.
2. Go to the following directory: %localappdata%\Devolutions
3. Rename the RemoteDesktopManager folder to RemoteDesktopManager.old.
4. Launch RDM again.

Please note that resetting the configuration will remove all your data source information, and you must enter it again.

Unfortunately, this did not work. I did not have any issue reconnecting to our data source, but the same problems I listed above came back. Window layout does not persist if I close and re-open the app (literally, the interface is blank when I open RDM), and smart folder no longer. However, I now believe the issue with smart folders is related to the windows layout. I had forgotten that the smart folder contents are displayed in the Dashboard tab, and that tab is also gone. I tried toggling it on/off in the Window menu but it did not do anything.

The portable version is working just fine so I am going to continue working off of that for now.

Could you try the steps below and tell me if the problem still occurs?

  • Could you please locate the *.lyt files within your Portable Installation's directories, copy them, and overwrite the existing .lyt files in your RDM installation at Appdata > Local > Devolutions > Remote Desktop Manager?

Apologies for the late reply. I think I am more or less back to normal now. I ended up removing the client and making sure all files were deleted from Program Files and AppData before reinstalling. No issues for the last couple of days.
