Windows to Mac via ARD and file transfers

Windows to Mac via ARD and file transfers

avatar

The clipboard is enabled but only text can be copied and pasted. Is there a way to transfer files between the Mac host and windows client? I tried drag/drop but that doesn't work and copy/paste just shows the last text clipboard content when I check in on the Mac. I don't see any "local resources" options for ARD.

Thanks!

Edit: I suppose I can set up iCloud access on my PC but I'd still like to know if I'm missing how to get simple copy/paste of files working between the host and client.

Hello

The short answer is: it's not currently supported.

Apple Remote Desktop is a closed protocol (it's based on RFB/VNC, but with a large number of proprietary features and extensions). Our implementation currently only supports text on the clipboard. While we understand the messages that need to be passed to support other formats, the integration into the product is quite a large chunk of work and there simply hasn't been the time or demand to see that through. I believe we do have a ticket open for that but it's not been on any official roadmap.

This is an issue that comes up from time-to-time and I'll propose it internally for the 2024.2 roadmap.

In the meantime, an iCloud share would work. Another approach that you might try is (assuming you have Remote Management enabled on the Mac) to create an Apple Remote Management connection to the host. This is a connection type that tries to recreate features from Apple's own Remote Desktop client (the full ARD client, not screen sharing) and provides a file browser / transfer as well as other features like power management and interactive chat. I'd add a disclaimer that this connection type is built on top of a very complex protocol and I'm well aware that it contains bugs and rough edges. I'd encourage you to give it a try, however, and forward any feedback you have to us via the forum.

Please, let me know if something isn't clear or you have further questions.

Kind regards,

I set up the iCloud client for Windows, which is a lot of files to sync to my PC, so I'll see what I can get working with Apple Remote Management. Thanks!
