Misleading Message/Menu Item Text with Multiple Selections in Folder Detail Pane

Misleading Message/Menu Item Text with Multiple Selections in Folder Detail Pane

avatar

Hello, very minor issue but just wanted to report a message that is somewhat misleading - it seems when we have the "show folder details as selection" option enabled (enabled via the ellipsis menu in the bottom-right corner of the detail pane when a folder is selected in the navigation pane), then if we select multiple items in the detail pane on the right and right-click, the context menu options imply that anything we do will affect the entire folder rather than just the selected items. For example, if I select 5 entries in a folder in the details pane and right-click, the "delete" option says "Delete folder (5 entries)" (rather than "delete selection (5 entries)" which is what it says if the "show folder details as selection" option is not enabled OR if I multi-select in the nav pane on the left and right-click). Although the "5 entries" part is accurate (based on how many items I selected) the fact that it says its going to delete the entire folder is a bit misleading. If I actually click the option to delete, the pop-up warning dialog has the same misleading message, but if I confirm then it does in fact only delete the selected entries... so it is just a cosmetic issue, but it might be good to fix so as not to concern people that they might delete an entire folders' worth of items. Screenshots are attached.

Thanks!

David Willis

Hello David,

Thank you for contacting us regarding this,

  • Could you please specify the version of RDM you are currently using?

From quickly testing on my end, I've not been able to reproduce the behavior on the latest version 2023.2.32.0, when a folder is added in the selection the prompt remains "Delete Selection (5Entries)"

Let me know

Best regards,

Hello, yes I am on v2023.1.23.0.

The issue specifically happens only when selecting items in the right pane (the details pane) - selecting items in the left pane (navigation pane) seems to be fine. But if I select a folder in the nav pane on the left, and then select multiple entries in the details pane on the right, and then right-click those selections in the details pane, the message is "delete folder" (X entries) when in fact it seems like it should be "delete selection (X entries)".

In order to reproduce this, you have to specifically enable the "show folder details as selection" (from the ellipsis menu in the bottom right corner of the right/details pane).

Thanks!

Hello David,

Thank you for your reply,

I see, I'd like to confirm which type of data source you're currently using in RDM? I'm wondering if updating to the latest version of RDM will resolve this issue for you, that being said before doing so, I would like to validate your data source to avoid any issues.

Let me know,

Best regards,

Hello,

I have actually seen this on two machines - one using 2023.1.23 as I mentioned yesterday, on that machine it was a local SQLite data source. Today I saw it on a different machine that was fully up to date (v2023.2.32) using an Azure SQL data source.

Just want to clarify (re: your first message) - adding a folder to the selection is not what causes the issue. It is selecting multiple items within a folder when the "show folder details as selection" option is enabled.

Thanks

Hello David,

Thank you for your reply,

I'm wondering if could provide me with a short recording of the behavior and the configuration itself? This will allow me to reproduce your exact configuration and hopefully reproduce the issue.

I will send you a private message with a link so you can securely send us the recording.

Also, would it be possible for you to create a portable installation of the latest version of RDM and see if this issue still occurs? To do so, you will need to do the following:

1- Download the .zip file below:
https://remotedesktopmanager.com/home/thankyou/rdmbin
2- Create a new folder on your Desktop
3- Extract the content of the .zip file into the folder created at #2
4- Go to this folder once the .zip file has been extracted and run remotedesktopmanager.exe
5- Connect to your data source

Let me know,

Best regards,

Samuel Dery
