Macbook - ARD - Black screen from new Windows 11 PC, RDM Crashes
I have been able to connect to my MacBook Pro M1 Max (Ventura 13.5.2) before with no issues from Windows 10 but now I have a new Windows 11 PC and the screen does not display; it's just black. I log on to the Mac first before connecting remotely.
What's odd is that this worked initially before disconnecting; just for a minute and then it disconnected. I rebooted the Mac but now I just get a black screen briefly before RDM crashes to the desktop. I can ping the Mac, and I can see the mouse move on the Mac when I just see a black screen.
I am connecting directly to the default port 5900. This is the same as on the Windows 10 PC. Display in settings on Remote Desktop Manager is for Current Monitor/Current Desktop and I only have the one monitor on both PC and the Mac. I tried both scaled and non scaled with no difference. Authentication type is ARD, request shared session is true, Set to "Share the display" when another user is logged on. Performance is set to Adaptive Quality (Apple MVC codec) with high resolution. Both undocked and embedded have the same results.
I have attached the event logs for the RDM APPCRASH event.. RDM is version 2023.2.28.0 64-bit.
Are there different settings or additional installations required for Windows 11? Do I need to download a separate VNC package? Thanks!
Edit: Changing the performance to "High Quality (zlib 16-bit) does not change anything. After rebooting the Mac the RDM client no longer crashes, it just stays connected with a black screen. I can use "lock screen" and the Mac screen turns completely black and is unresponsive until I unlock the, still black, screen in RDM.
Edit2: If I keep it docked I stay connected with a black screen on the Windows client. If I try to undock it *then* RDM crashes. The Windows 10 client still works fine with the same configuration and version in RDM.

Hello,
If you update RDM to the latest version (2023.2.30.0) does this issue persist ?
To my knowledge, a fix was released for this particular issue in the latest version of RDM Windows.
Best regards,
Hi Zachary,
I updated and I still get the black screen on the client, I'm afraid. I can see the client mouse movements on the MacBook itself as before.
The undocked window doesn't crash RDM now though.
Thanks!
Hello,
Understood, would you be open to me opening a case so that I may look into this issue closely in a remote session ?
Please let me know and if so I will open the ticket and email you a link to schedule a date and time.
Best regards,
That will be fine. I should be available most days if I don't have a conflicting meeting. I only have the one Windows 11 PC so far so can't try with a different client GPU on this OS. I have an RTX-4090 on my Windows 11 client PC. The Windows 10 PC client is an RTX-3080ti and still works as expected.
Thanks!
Hello,
Perfect !
In that case, I will open the case and send you an email to schedule the remote session.
Best regards,
An update for the search engines :)
Thanks to Zachary for the assistance with the issue!
In my Windows 11 environment I had the display scaling set to 100% (the default is 150%) and I had OSD for GPU Tweak III enabled. If I reset the scale to the default 150% (which is huge on my monitor) then I could connect to the Mac with no issues. If I added RemoteDesktopManager.exe to the blacklist for OSD then I could get the Mac connection to work even with the scale at the preferred 100%.
I'm not sure why Windows 10 didn't have the issue but there it is. :|
Hello Bill,
I'm very happy to have read in our case that a resolution was found.
Thanks for sharing this fix with our community in the forum as well !
I'm certain it will help those with similar issues in Windows 11.
Best regards,
