GPO "Disable Onboarding"
Hello,
I found the GPO "Disable Onboarding" and the Option "Prompt Onboarding on startup". Are they doing the same...? Don´t think so and the description does not help.
I ask this because sometimes we install the application by hand and when you miss the last dialogue, where you can deselect the start of RDM, RDM starts and creates a default database. Can I prohibit this with the GPO...?

The option "prompt onboarding on startup" might be better named as "prompt onboarding on next startup" as that is more aligned with its objective. It's always unchecked by default, but you can check it to prompt the onboarding on the next start of RDM, and after the onboarding is done, the option will be turned back off.
If you disable the onboarding completely with the GPO, there are two possible behaviors:
- If the user doesn't have a configuration file (either a default.cfg or the regular RDM configuration files), a default database (SQLite) will be created
- If the user already has a default.cfg or an RDM configuration file with a datasource, the onboarding will not prompt

Thanks for the explanation, every time I try to solve my "problem", I basically turn in circles...
I really want to avoid the creation of a SQLite database as we migrated to MS SQL and I don´t want to create a custom installation as this would mean I have to re-create the installer every time a new version comes out.
Do you think it would be somehow possible to create a new GPO setting like "Do Not Run Unconfigured" or something like this? If no default.cfg or regular RDM configuration files exist, the application should only display a dialogue that says configuration missing and then close. No SQLite database should be created.
As I wrote our users sometimes install the application by hand an it should not create "garbage" (the SQLite database and other things) that we don´t need.

I discussed this with David recently and we're getting quite close to not 'needing' RDM to have any datasource, thus avoiding creating an SQLite by default. I understand this can be very annoying for users who are experienced with the application and don't need the onboarding nor a default datasource.
I will check if this is something we can put on our next roadmap (2024.1).
