Inheritable custom field

Hi

Could it be possible to have a custom field which is inheritable?

So if I have a folder structure like this:
Lvl 0 - Root
Lvl 1 -- Customer XXXX
Lvl 2 --- Servers
Lvl 3 ---- ServerXVY
Lvl 4 ----- RDP Entry

Then I in Lvl 1 enter that custom field 1 is XXXX and maybe enable that it should populate recursively to all children/sub children
In Lvl 4 I set the Tab title to $CUSTOM_FIELD1$-$HOSTNAME$

So when connecting the tab title becomes XXXX - ServerXVY

Hope it makes sense.

Regards Lars.

Hello Lars,

We currently have a feature that might be able to help you.

If you notice, in the variable list, there are multiple variable prefixes for folders:

The way these works is that RDM will try to find the "closest" folder matching that type and resolve the variable using that folder. For example, using the $COMPANY_CUSTOM_FIELD1$ variable will resolve to the closest Company-type folder and take its Custom Field 1 value. This means you can arrange your folders in such a way that you can make a sort of mock-up 'inheritance' system.

Here's a concrete example. Take this folder structure containing a Company folder, a Site folder, and a Folder folder (the default kind), with an entry in the final one:

In this example, I set the RDP's name to the following: $FOLDER_CUSTOM_FIELD1$ - $SITE_CUSTOM_FIELD1$ - $COMPANY_CUSTOM_FIELD1$
Each folder has the Custom Field 1 value configured to "CompanyCF1", "SiteCF1" and "FolderCF1" respectively.

As you can see, this could allow you to take the custom field value of a folder that isn't the direct parent of your RDP entry.

Does this work for your scenario?

Hubert Mireault

Ahh, thats smart, I knew you were ahead of me.
I have always wondered why there were different folder types when many of them didn't expose any extra fields, but now i makes som much more sense!

Thank you.
