Cannot apply license to RDM Mac

Cannot apply license to RDM Mac

avatar

I bought a license in July 2022 for what was then called the Enterprise edition. Somewhere in the upgrade process, I got switched to the Free edition and now, I cannot find a way to upgrade that edition to today's Teams edition by entering the license. The selection to enter a license in the Administration tab of the ribbon is missing.

Deleting the app and re-downloading it, even using the Teams selection on the downloads page as well as a link sent by sales does not resolve the issue.

I cannot use Bitwarden integration with the Free edition.

Hello,

As part of the unify project to merge the Free and the Team (Enterprise) installers of RDM, the license is now applied directly at the data source level. For more details, you can refer to
https://blog.devolutions.net/2022/10/news-remote-desktop-manager-is-changing-for-the-better/

This change also means that the only personal data sources that can have a license applied are SQLite and the Devolutions Password Hub Personal, other ones, such as Google Drive or XML, can no longer unlock the Team feature. Changing to Hub Personal, for example, allows you to have multiple computers connected to it, all having the Team features, and only having to manage the license in one location, making it easier to manage your license.

SQLite, on the other hand, is a more secure way to maintain your information locally, since that data is encrypted inside. You can also easily migrate to it by performing an export of your data source, and an import in the SQLite or Hub Personal after. You can refer to this KB for more details - https://kb.devolutions.net/rdm_data_migration.html

You can then enter your license key under Administration > Licenses - https://help.remotedesktopmanager.com/rdm_administration_licenses.html.

You will be all set at this point!

I see.

So, to recap:

  • I was downgraded without any real awareness or consent.
  • I have to convert a data source -- also unclear on when or how that was publicized or what the impact is to my use case.
  • The blog post referenced in the answer above says, "If a user switches from Remote Desktop Manager Free to Enterprise, there is no need to uninstall/re-install anything. Simply purchase and add your license to your RDM data source."

All this work just to use a product I wanted to support by purchasing a license.

What have you guys been thinking? It's almost as much work to set up this thing up as it is to use it.

Hello,

I understand that you are facing some difficulties with the licensing model modification in our software. I can empathize with your frustration, and I want you to know that we take your concerns seriously. I want to assure you that we are constantly striving to improve our software to better meet the needs of our users. The licensing model modification that was introduced in the 2022.3 version was an important step for us to ensure the security and reliability of our product.

I just verified the release notes and while it was mentioned in RDM Windows, it was not displayed for the RDM Mac version, however, and we regret that oversight.

Regarding your second point, I want to clarify that licensing at the data source level was never an option for XML, Dropbox, OneDrive, and other similar data sources. This has not changed. However, we did make an improvement by adding Devolutions Hub Personal to the list of personal allowed Enterprise versions, as requested by some of our users who were using DOD previously.

Finally, I agree that it will require some manipulation on your end to use the product in the same way you did in the past. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, and we appreciate your understanding. I hope the KB I have sent will make it as easy as possible.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions or concerns.

Best regards,

Richard Boisvert

Let me ask you, would you be happy if:

  • The Mac version didn't offer to convert
  • The ARM64 version does, but crashes ugly?

Not to mention:

  • To keep creds in the product synced -- oh, sorry, I mean to use a license I paid for -- I have to adopt a password vault system that is
    • Proprietary
    • Largely undocumented
    • Subject to who knows what product development whims you guys come up with next.

No thanks.

I just lived through the LastPass debacle and waited seven years for a keyboard fix in the Mac version that got dropped and then -- magically!! -- got put back in via an undocumented config file change.

Again, would you be happy with this sequence?

But in the hopes that you fix the ARM64 migration thing, here's a recording of it and the text from the (misshapen) crash dialog.

Hello,

I understand that you are feeling frustrated, and I apologize for the inconvenience you are experiencing. It is important to us that our customers have a positive experience, and I can see why you might be unhappy with the issues you have mentioned.

Regarding the Mac and ARM64 version issues, we appreciate the information and feedback you have provided. We take these matters seriously, and I will make sure to forward your message to our development team so they can investigate the problems and work on solutions. The logs and the attached recording will be valuable in helping us address the issue.

As for the Hub Personal, I understand your reluctance to adopt a proprietary system, especially after having a challenging experience with LastPass. We are continually working to improve our products and documentation, and we will take your feedback into account as we make updates.

Best regards,

Richard Boisvert

Hello,

Regarding the migration tool to Hub Personal in the Mac version, it is already on their to-do list. It was only recently developed for the Windows version (in February), but it is currently planned to be added internally in the next two weeks.

I attached the feature request to this thread; we will let you know once it is available.

Best regards,

Richard Boisvert

@richard, I too am running into this. I am using a Hub Personal that is shared between my Mac and Windows installs. In neither of the installations do I have the shown Administration menu that allows for user and license management. Am I missing a step somewhere? Honestly the documentation on this is pretty bad IMHO.

Hello itguy

Could you please confirm what version of RDM you are using? With 2023.1, you should not have any issues with a Devolutions Hub Personal data source:

You can refer to those help topics, you just need to skip step 2 since you cannot enter multiple licenses.
