Is S3 encrypted?

Is Amazon S3 encrypted in transit with SSL when a connections file is saved there? I'm pretty sure it's not on S3 itself although access is pretty well protected if you don't give out the login info, but I'm curious if it stays encrypted in transit to/from S3 since I just set up S3 to hold connection files :-)
