"Smart Sizing" not completely filling "Work Area" on External Monitor(s)

avatar

Good morning, all...

I recently connected my Dell Laptop to a D6000 Docking Station with two External Monitors.

All three screens area utilizing 1920 x 1080 resolution.

On either of the External Monitors, the screen does not utilize the whole window, and I get the Grey bars on each side of the remote screen, as seen below:

However, when I am on the laptop screen, the window fills as it should:

What setting am I missing!?

Have a great morning!

Hello,

Thank you for contacting us on that matter!

Would it be possible for you to go into the properties of your RDP entry, under the "Display" section and set the "Screen sizing mode" to "smart Sizing"?

Once this is done, please try to launch your RDP connection once more and see if the bars are still visible.

Best regards,

Good morning, James..

This is how I have all my assets set up:

Perfect! In that case, would it be possible for you to try the "smart Reconnect" option instead? You may have better results with it.

That doesn't do any kind of resolution either.

If it's something that I just have to deal with that can't be resolved or is a 1 off, so be it.

I see. Have you tried to change the "Remote Desktop Size" to 1920 x 1080?

Good afternoon, sir...

I have verified that it is in fact sizing to the correct size:

Even if I turn off the smart sizing and explicitly put the resolution, same thing.

Who knows.. Could just be all three of my external monitors.

I will try another one in the next couple days.

Good morning.

I take it there has been no duplicating this issue in your test lab?

Since upgrading to the latest version (as you can see in the screenshot), It doesn't even fit height wise anymore.

Hardware in play:

Laptop:

  • Dell Latitude 5590

Docking Stations (I use them both interchangeably):

  • Dell Universal Dock D6000 (Thunderbolt Connection to Laptop)
  • Dell Dock WD19 (Thunderbolt Connection to Laptop)

Monitors:

  • ASUS VS247 (D6000 Dock)
  • Dell SR2320L (D6000 Dock)
  • Dell P2412H (WD19 Dock)

This happens regardless of what I change my RDP settings to for the connection.

Thanks!

Hello,

Forgive the delay, I believe I was able to reproduce the issue.

I will open an internal ticket and look into it further with our engineers

Good morning.

I just wanted to inquire about an update.

I now have a third external monitor I need for daily usage, so wanted to see if we are any closer to making this look good across external monitors connected to a docking station?

Thank you!

Hello,

We're still trying to reliably replicate your issue. As it turns out we haven't been able to get your specific behavior. I noticed that in an earlier post you stated having all your entries to Smart Sizing with current work size area. Have you tried creating a new entry and leaving the display settings to default? (Both the Sizing mode and desktop size).

If that doesn't work, it's possible that there's a scaling issue of some kind. If you could verify the DPI scaling of your displays (both the main and the ones experiencing issues) Those can be found by right clicking in your desktop and clicking Display Settings, they should be under the Scale and layout section.

Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this.

Good morning...

So the above option did not do anything different than the outcome I have been seeing.

So this seems to be where the issue is...

External Monitors that have Grey bars on sides:

Laptop Display that works as expected:
forum image

If I change all to 125%, then the screen fills as it should.

HOWEVER, with this setting, as I'm sure you are aware, it makes the whole display bigger and cuts things off as the text, graphics, etc., are "zoomed" in. This kind of defeats the purpose of getting external monitors that are bigger in size, so you can fit more stuff on the screen. :-)

Is there a way to fix this issue within RDM itself?

Just doesn't seem right that RDM would be the only program that I have on my laptop that does not "fit the screen" correctly.

The program(s) I used to use for Remote Desktopm Management did not encounter this issue at all.

Thanks for the update and suggestion(s).

Hello,

Thanks for the quick response. Now that we have a culprit we can better pinpoint the problem. We'll investigate and come back to you.

Hello again,

I've done some digging, and have some additional information. The issue right now is that RDM detects your "Main System" scaling and uses it for all DPI scaling. This is something we're working on but have no ETA for a full per-monitor at this time.

That said, I've noticed that the issue only happens when the main system happens to be bigger than the external monitors (for example, if your laptop was at 100%, the other monitors could be at 100% as well, or bigger in fact (125-150%), and still work).

While I understand that this does not provide you with a fix, I figured I would still let you know that these were options and updates.
Note that this does not mean we've stopped investigating, I will keep looking if it's possible to provide at least a temporary fix until such a time as RDM is able to be fully DPI aware.

Good morning, Jafran.

Wanted to give you an update to assist in your development.

I updated my equipment here, and everything now works like a champ.

Looks like if the docking station does not have DisplayLink Processing Capabilities built-in, that is where the issue lies.

Just wanted to update you in case you come by this for another customer, or to assist in your development on the backend for this in the future.

Even with one display DPI set higher than the others, the display now fills the whole screen on two of the External 24" monitors that I have RDM running on.

Old Equipment:

Laptop:

  • Dell Latitude 5590

Docking Stations (I use them both interchangeably):

  • Dell Universal Dock D6000 (Thunderbolt Connection to Laptop)
  • Dell Dock WD19 (Thunderbolt Connection to Laptop)

Monitors:

  • ASUS VS247 (D6000 Dock)
  • Dell SR2320L (D6000 Dock)
  • Dell P2412H (WD19 Dock)

New Equipment:
Laptop:

  • Dell Latitude 5590

Docking Station:

  • Plugable Brand Docking Station (UD-ULTC4K) with DusplayLink

Monitors:

  • ASUS VS247 (1920x1080 @ 100%)
  • Dell P2412H (1920x1080 @ 100%)
  • Spectre E249W-19203R (1920x1080 @ 100%)
  • Dell 5590 Integrated Laptop Display (1920x1080 @ 125%) - Fourth Display was not available on other docks
