RDM (free) switching from http to https on internal browser, won't do http

I'm having an odd issue and cannot see the problem.

I had a home firewall that was managed from inside at https://address, and I had it in as a tabbed internal browser. Worked fine, but every time I hit it, I had to acknowledge the lack of a cert.

It was inside so I changed the firewall to do http instead of https, changed the properties of the RDM entry to http and... it hangs, fails.

From a regular browser (e.g. chrome) works fine as http.

The problem is that RDM pops up initially with an address bar of http, but is sending https, and the firewall loggs a "unexpected TLS ClientHello on clear port". After it fails, the RDM address bar shows https again (with the S), though there is a brief delay after the error message.

I've confirmed a half dozen times the properties say http. I've shut down and restarted RDM, still does it. The firewall web is not giving a redirect (confirmed with other browsers). I can find nothing forcing it to https.

The "More settings" "Force https" is clear, not set.

I created a new entry with an explicit http and it still switched to https.

I can't seem to force it to HTTP.

Setting it to Chrome works fine, as does setting it to external (which forced Chrome).

Setting it to undocked did not work.

I've tried both the current and legacy website.

RDM 2022.2.20.0 64 bit on Windows 10x64 Pro up to date.

Is the RDM internal web client only capable of doing HTTPS?

Hello Linwood,

Thank you for contacting us on that matter!

Would it be possible for you to update to the latest version of RDM and see if this issue persists?

Best regards,

Hmmm... that's odd. I KNOW I clicked the option to upgrade a few days prior, I remember all the release notes and breaking changes and such. But it's not upgraded.

I've got a ton of windows open and working with a client for a while, but when I can get idle I will try again.

Well, it turns out I wasn't crazy. The updater just doesn't work for me. The progress bar runs across, the "update" is now available, but when I hit it, it downloads again (at least the progress bar restarts). It never actually seems to do the install. This is using the check for updates, Download This version and install Now. Download when application exits does nothing (when I exit). Download using your browser also fails, this with a forum image

So I went to the web site manually and downloaded it, and ran setup. This ran to completion and launched RDM.

The good news is that the new version worked fine in the web browser, I did not get the https reversion/error.

The bad news is that the update was a bit of a challenge. Maybe just something weird with mine. Maybe not. FYI.

Thank you.

Hello,
I've made some fixes with a race condition in the installer and it's included in the version you've just installed. Let me know if your next update works well.

By the way, do you have the full url of the error in external mode?

I had a laptop not yet upgraded, so I tried it there, and got this:

I ran the auto update and got "The application is unable to complete the auto update. You can complete it manually". It gives no indication of why, and it failed immediately upon being invoked. It nicely took me to my browser and the download page, which is a bit odd since the above did not.

This was one I somehow (I forget the details) imported the config from my desktop. I rarely use it. It is on 2022.1.27.0.

I'll leave it un-updated if there's anything useful I can tell you. I'm confident it would run from a downloaded update, so no worries if this is not worth chasing. My original issue appears solved by the updated version.
