Aloha,
I've tried some of the different settings i can choose within RDM (Codec, Retina, RDP options) but i experience some noticable "lag" on some of my RDP targets. This means windows are behaving very slow, mouse point highlighting is not at point but behind and so on...
Is this something i simply have accept running on a MAC or can this be fixed with some kind of best practice settings?
My targets are mostly server 2019 and 2016
Hello,
Thank you for contacting us on that matter!
which version of RDM and what type of Data Source you are currently using?
Also, do you experience the same "lag" if you launch your RDP connection outside of RDM?
Best regards,
James Lafleur
Hey James,
im using 2022.3.14.1 on MacOS 13.1.
My Data Source is a central MS SQL server.
I've downloaded "Royal TSX" which is also based on FreeRDP and it seems noticable better out of the box.
Best Regards
Daniel
Hello Daniel,
Thank you for your swift reply!
Would it be possible for you to provide me screenshots of the configuration of your RDP entry in RDM via private message? I would like to see the settings that are not using their default values.
Best regards,
James Lafleur
Hello Daniel
I don't know if you managed to reply to my colleague yet, but I'd like to give some general advice that might be helpful.
For best performance, I would recommend the following settings:
Experience
> "Detect Network Automatically" checked
> "Enabled data compression" checked, and a level of RDP 6.1 or higher
"Detect Network Automatically" is a new addition to RDM but since you are on a recent version you should have it.
Advanced > Codec level 8
Rendering Engine > Metal
Finally, be aware of the size of the remote display. If you configure a very large remote display (in Display > Remote Desktop Size) but then choose "Smart Sizing", you'll be asking the server for a large resolution but then just scaling it down on the client side anyway. I don't know if you normally work inside a tab or full screen but I might recommend choosing a display size of "Default", "Full Screen" or "Current Work Area Size". Then selecting "Dynamic Resolution" for "Screen Sizing Mode". This should adapt the remote resolution to what you are using locally.
If you're still experiencing lag or unacceptable performance, I think we'd need some more specific information, starting with:
The session log will tell us which settings are being applied on the connection, and which codec is being negotiated. Some of the settings are just flags that are used to negotiate the final details of the session with the server. For example, it's possible to choose the bit depth of the image but that's just a hint to the server - modern RDP versions don't allow anything less than 32 bit.
FWIW accessing modern Windows servers (11 and Server 2022) over my LAN connection is extremely fast, and I have to say in many cases I find it to exceed the performance of MS RDP. RDP performance and reliability is a big focus for us currently so I'd be eager to help get to the bottom of this.

I fear that I am getting the same issue. I am on Mac OS 26.3 (ARM) with the latest version of RDM. The windows box I am connecting to is a Windows Server 2019 Data Center VM. I have attached the session logging you mentioned in your post. I also removed the IP address on line 60. Once I RDPed in (fresh session), I just logged clicked the start button a few times. Even that was slow. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
I tried the below app as well and got relatively the same performance so I guess it is not just RDM. That said, when I switch to my windows laptop and use RDM again (same hub based vault), the performance is significantly better.

RDP slow on RDP on some boxes
Hello
If you're getting the same results through Microsoft's first part client (Windows App) that would imply something systemic rather than anything we can directly address on our side.
You said that performance is good from your Windows machine, but is all else the same? Same network, similar client machine specs, etc?
Kind regards,
