Can not connect with OpenVPN

avatar

Hi.

I am using public IP of our server to RDP when in office network. Outside the office, I am using the local IP over OpenVPN Connect. I am walking through the methods described in the RDM blog for two methods. Of which the first is to create a VPN entry and use it as session in RDPs and the second to be configuring VPN inside the RDP settings.

I can not make RDM use neither of the methods. It never connects through OpenVPN. RDM confirms OpenVPN path and says application is ready. I try testing it in the VPN configuration dialog, but nothing happens.

The scenario I want to achieve is;

When I am connected to my office network:

1- RDM connects to the main IP of the server, without the need to OpenVPN
This is already the standard.

When I am outside the office network:

1- RDM tries the public IP, which it won't be able to connect.
2- Connects OpenVPN.
3- Tries alternate host (which is to be the local IP of the server) and connects to it.

How is this possible?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Devolutions Support.

I have a few questions which you can hopefully answer.

  • Which version of RDM are you using?
  • Which type of data source are you using?

I’m also wondering if you could provide us with some screenshots of your current configuration.

Let me know,

Best regards,

RDM Free Portable 2022.2.26.0 64-bit
I am using a local data source.

This is the VPN entry:

This is the VPN settings of RDP entry:

In the settings tab, I selected the VPN entry in the first screenshot.

As the second method, I also tried setting VPN to OpenVPN Connect rather than "Session" and did the same settings here; but no luck again.

Hello,

Thank you for your reply and for the screenshots,

I'm wondering if changing the "Type" field to "VPN Link" and in the "Settings (VPN Link)" section pointing to your VPN entry would help in this case,

Could you try this and let me know if you encounter the same issue?

Best regards,

Thank you for your time. It doesn't solve the problem because it can not connect to VPN in the first place. I mean when I create a separate entry for OpenVPN and try to open session, it already says it can not connect to VPN. So using this VPN connection as link or session doesn't help.

By the way, using OpenVPN Connect standalone with the same profile file, I can connect to VPN. But what I wonder is, this profile requires me to enter my VPN credentials when connecting with OpenVPN client (only for the first time I import the file). But I don't see where I can put the credentials for VPN in RDM. Could this lead us somewhere?

Hello,

Thank you for your reply,

From my understanding, RDM is only using command lines to launch the VPN using the provided profile there does not seem to be an option to add the credentials in the OpenVPN Connect entry type,

I'm not too familiar with this but perhaps it could be included in your Profile file?

Let me know,

Best regards,
