hi,
when closing RDM I get this (since the last version I think):
*.mrimg is the file extension for backups made by https://www.macrium.com/ - it looks like this is some kind of extension installed by RDM and this file seems to get deleted when closing RDM which Macrium Reflect prevents (it protects it's backups from ransomware this way)
can you check please?
Hello,
To help us understand the issue, could you confirm the following?
Please note that this method may also be used in other contexts, but the file browsers are the most likely the culprit.
Best regards,
Richard Boisvert
yes to the first two questions, but the third I don't really understand. I remember, that I accessed some .mrimg files via sftp but why do they end up in your temp folder (and they can be huge, so this shouldn't happen..)
Hello,
Let me explain why this happens in a bit more detail.
When using the embedded SFTP entry (or other embedded file explorers) in RDM, we show an icon for the remote file. This icon isn't information the protocol gives to us, instead we have to find out what the appropriate image is ourselves. How do we do it? We take the extension of the file on the remote machine for which we want to show an image, in your case ".mrimg", and we make an empty local file in %TEMP%\RDM\Extensions with the same extension. In this case, it would create a file called File.mrimg. From there, Windows itself assigns it an icon due to recognising the file extension (since you have Macrium installed on your machine), and RDM can take that same image and show it in the SFTP browser.
When RDM closes, it tries to clear the files and folders in %TEMP%\RDM as they should only be used by RDM and weren't meant to stay on disk long term. It seems like Macrium thinks that since the file extension of the file matches what it uses (.MRIMG), that it's one of its backup files and blocks the operation.
What I find odd is that you say the file has data in it. I'm not familiar with Macrium Image Guardian, but I'm wondering if it automatically puts data in it at some point when it recognises the file extension. RDM itself shouldn't write an MRIMG file with data in it in that folder.
As for a solution to this, at the moment I can only see us making a change to ignore "MRIMG" files when trying to show the icons in file browsers.

I meant, that there is potentially data in it, but if you create empty files this is odd but ok. yes, please make a change so that this doesn't happen again (and it doesn't seem very elegant to me, maybe you find a better way when you are on it ;)
Thank you for the confirmation, I wasn't sure if on your setup the file had data in it for some reason, but RDM itself shouldn't be writing anything in it.
I have opened a ticket to at least ignore MRIMG files for now to avoid future conflicts with this program, and we will see if we can figure out a different solution to achieve the same result.

Hubert Mireault
Hello,
The fix for this issue has been completed internally. Starting from the next version of RDM, file explorers will not create .mrimg files in the Temp folder.
