Tab groups are displayed / hidden / overwritten randomically

Hello,

In our quest to organize a multi-vault RDM tree associated with a single data source we are using the tab groups, other than the colors, to differentiate and manage more comfortably the sessions opened from the various vaults. So we have now 4 AD forests, each configured in its own vault, each having its specific color and tab group. As explained in other posts, we are using the templates to instance the sessions, and the templates are set to always inherit the credential, VPN / jump host, colors and now also the tab group. In each vault, there is a 'root' node which represents the AD domain, where all the proper values / colors are defined.

Unfortunately we have seen that the display of the tab groups is very erratic and inconsistent. In the following snippet it's shown that three sessions, each from a different vault / domain (hence a different tab group name), are opened. However, instead of three different tab groups, only one is shown, the other two being lost / having been overwritten by the subsequent session openings. Sometimes two different tab groups are shown, and opening the session with a third one results in the mess below. Sometimes a session with no tab group value, or a session with a tab group value, hides completely the tab groups bar and there is no way to force it to be shown again (and sometimes, again randomly, the tab groups bar reappear) .

It's very difficult to give a precise sequence of step to reproduce the issue. The only hint is the fact that we are using only ONE template for RDP sessions, like in the above example, and we are relying heavily on inheritance.

Using version 2022.2.20, BTW.

Thank you.

Hello,

Could you confirm your Data Source type?

Hello Etienne,

The data source is a connection to MS SQL Server. Sorry, I cannot report right now the database's schema version because I will not have access to our system for the next few days. However, in a recent Teams session with your support staff, it was determined that the schema version was at the level expected with version 2022.2.20 of RDM.

In another thread of this forum there is another opened case with an issue regarding host aliases and gateway inheritance. For that case, we were requested to upload the template we use which is, incidentally, the same of this case. The template has been sent via e-mail to your support address.

Thank you.

Hello,

My colleague tried to reproduce the issue but wasn't able to get the same behavior. It is an issue with everyone? If not, could you try with a portable version?
1- Download the .zip file below:
https://remotedesktopmanager.com/home/thankyou/rdmbin
2- Create a new folder on your Desktop
3- Extract the content of the .zip file into the folder created at #2
4- Go in this folder once the .zip file has been extracted and run remotedesktopmanager64.exe
5- Enter your current serial

Hello Etienne,

We are sorry but the portable version has demonstrated nothing in the past cases, as most of the issues are normally due to the data contained in the MS SQL database, and that would not change between an installed and a portable version.

We wanted to wait a little bit more and we have detected that with version 2022.2.23.0 the bug is still there. As we have no doubt that it may be difficult for you to reproduce the issue, as an exceptional case we have prepared a short (censored) video where it is possible to see what we are reporting. Please see the attached video.

In the video, we are using a single MS SQL database connection. The database hosts 4 vaults at the moment, and each vault (well, actually their root node, which is a domain) has different values regarding the Tab Group and Color settings. All the child nodes inherit those values, so in practice what's happening is that you have a visual clue (the colored border) for the sessions opened from the different vaults, as well as a way to show only the sessions pertaining to a single vault (using the tab group).

The video shows that at the beginning we are opening a web session from one of the vaults, which is colored orange and has a "-Lab" tab group. Then we open a second web session from another vault, this time the color is green and the tab group is "Atlas". Unfortunately, as you can see, this last tab group REPLACES the previous one, instead of the two tabs being displayed side by side. Worst of all, upon the closing of one of the sessions, the tab group bar disappear completely, when it should have displayed the tab group for the remaining opened session.

The above behavior sometimes is random: if more sessions from a single vault are opened, and then another session from another vault is opened as well, it may be possible that the two tab groups are displayed as expected. Opening or closing more sessions leads to additional random behavior: tab groups may behave well, or do something similar to the video.

In short, tab groups are not reliable at all at least in our setup. Also, but this is just a nuisance, the fact the tab group bar is visualized dynamically depending on the presence of a session with a tab group shrinks or enlarges the display area of the sessions already opened, implying the addition of scrollbars. It would be much better to have the toolbar steadly visualized, or not impacting at all the display area used by the sessions.

Thanks.

Hello,

Thank you for the recording! We will investigate :)

Hello Etienne,

Great! I would add a possible hint: the clue is the switch from a vault to another one. It seems (but we can't confirm 100%) that the issue does not arise when the tab groups are all within a single vault. It's only when a session is opened from a different vault that the tab groups bar get messed.

Thanks.

Hello,

Do you have any news on this issue? If a fix is not foreseen we will have to skip the tab groups for the time being.

Thanks.

Hello,

I was not yet able to reproduce the issue on my side, could you send a quick recording of the behavior using the link I will send you in Private Messages?

Hello Etienne,

We did it already. See the video we attached 2-3 posts ago and my followup regarding the switching between vaults (this is probably the trick, sessions with different tag groups, from different vaults and in the same data connection). There isn't much more we can show.

Thanks.

Hello,

Good news! I was able to reproduce the issue on my side. A ticket will be open with the engineering department.

Hello Etienne,

Great! Thanks for the support.

Hi,

We have fixed the group tab over multiple vault issue internally. This fix should be available starting with version 2022.3.12.0

Thank you Jean-Francois,weI hope it will not take longer before being GA released.

Hello,

The official release is planned for next week!

If you wish to test the 2022.3.12 beta version in a portable version, you can download it here: https://cdn.devolutions.net/download/Devolutions.RemoteDesktopManager.Bin.2022.3.12.0.zip
