RDM stopped working (was using MySQL as data source)

Today my RDM stopped working - when I launch it - it just hangs indefinitely on a "Loading sessions from data source".

I've already found out that MySQL was marked as deprecated in february and then dismissed entirely in june. However up until today RDM worked for me and now it stopped. Here's what I've tried so far:

  1. update RDM to latest version - same results.
  2. downgrade RDM to version prior june 8th (when MySQL was ditched) - same results.
  3. connecting through powershell (both latest and old version) - same results.

Database itself works - I could access it with other DB explorer software (HeidiSQL) just fine.

I've already set up MSSQL database to use but question - how to move data? The only known method to me would be to export data but that's impossible because that requires connecting in the first place.
What are my options?

Hello Charg,

Thank you for contacting us on that matter!

Would it be possible for you to create a portable installation of the latest version of RDM and see if this issue still occurs? To do so, you will need to do the following:

1- Download the .zip file below:
https://remotedesktopmanager.com/home/thankyou/rdmbin
2- Create a new folder on your Desktop
3- Extract the content of the .zip file into the folder created at #2
4- Go in this folder once the .zip file has been extracted and run remotedesktopmanager64.exe
5- Enter your current serial
6- Connect to your MySQL data source

Even though the MySQL data source has been marked as deprecated in RDM, you should still be able to connect to it for the time being.

Same thing - when I try to add new data source app hangs indefinitely.

To be more specific, it happens when I click schema selection button.
Same happens if I click 'test schema' on the bottom right. Test host says all fine.

Is there anything else I could try?

Hello Charg,

Thank you for your swift reply!

Just to confirm with you, RDM simply hangs, and no error is shown? Would it be possible for you to do the following:

1- Go under Help -> Application Logs and use the "Clean-up" button to clear your logs
2- Go under File -> Options Advanced and set the "Debug level" to 1
3- Once this is done, try to perform the steps leading to this issue once more.
4- Reopen RDM since it should be hanging indefinitely at this point
5- Go back under Help -> Application Logs to provide us with this new log
6- Go under File -> Options Advanced and set the "Debug level" back to 0

Best regards,

Turned out to be some kind of weird hosting problem or incompatibility between RDM client software and database. What made it weird is that other 18 databases on same server used by various software continue to work fine, while RDM's database stopped working (or, rather, RDM and only RDM stopped being able to connect to it)

What helped is that I installed mysql server on my laptop, exported db's dump and restored it on this newly installed server on very same laptop - connection worked and I was able to connect, export as *.rdm and then restored this backup into freshly-created SQLServer datasource.
