I tried RDM recently but I am always prompted for user name and password for Windows RDP sessions. How do I get it to pass through my domain and password information? I am using a local data source and RDM version 2022.2.14.0. It is the free edition.
If it won't store and pass my credentials when I open an RDP session, then the application doesn't help me.
Hello,
Thank you for your reply,
Could you provide me a screenshot of your entry "Properties"? Have you already added your credentials to their respective "Username" / "Password" fields?
Let me know,
Best regards,
Samuel Dery
I have a domain and password saved in the "My Personal Credentials" section of the app. What I don't see is any way to apply those creds globally down the tree structure of servers I have listed.
I don't know what you mean when you ask this:
"Could you provide me a screenshot of your entry "Properties"? "
Hello,
Thank you for your reply,
You can access your entry "Properties" by performing a "Right-click" on your entry in the "Navigation Pane" and selecting "Properties".
In the "Properties" you could change the "Credentials" field to "My Personal Credentials" and use the "..." button to select your configured "My Personal Credentials", alternatively this could be configured on a folder entry and your RDP type entries in this folder could be set to "Inherited".
From my understanding, this should achieve what you're looking for.
Let me know if this helps,
Best regards,
Samuel Dery
I created a custom credential already and have been looking at properties of folders for some kind of inheritance option, but have not found it. In fact, I looked at "My Personal Credentials" in FILE > My Account Settings" and there is an entry there already. There's just not a way I can find to set any sort of inheritance.
Where would I look for some type of inheritance property in RDM Free version?
Hello,
In order to use your "My Personal Credential" globally in RDM Free, you would need to select the top folder of your tree structure, right-click on it, select "Properties" at the bottom of the list and then choose the following option (1):
The ellipsis button (2) will allow you to choose the credential that you would like to use from your "My Personal Credential".
Once your top folder is configured that way, the only thing you are left to do is make sure that the entries and folders stored underneath are set to "Inherited":
Let us know if that works for you!

If I set the Crdentials to "Inherited" at every level of the tree, then sometimes I am able to connect to a machine vbia rdp session without supplying creds in a prompt. Other times, I'm still prompted to supply creds.
I suspect that the connections which prompt you to supply credentials do so because they try to use credentials stored in your Windows Credential Manager first and that these credentials are not accepted by the remote server.
To validate this, could you please open your Windows Credential Manager the next time this issue occurs and verify if you have a set of credentials saved locally for this remote server?
James Lafleur
Thanks for the reply James. I don't have anything under Windows Credentials in Windows Credential Manager. The Generic Credentials area has some entries for Azure, Onedrive and a couple of other things, but nothing related to any of the AWS ec2 virtual machines I'm trying to connect to when I am sometimes prompted for creds.
You are more than welcome! Thank you for doing this verification.
The fact that you are only prompted for your credentials from time to time is really peculiar.
As a test, would it be possible for you to go under File -> Options -> Types -> Remote Desktop and change the RDP engine that you are currently using for MSRDC and see if this issue still occurs?
James Lafleur
It currently says "Latest". If I change it to MSRDC, then I get this error. When I click that documentation link it indicates that option is for Azure and Windows 365.
MSRDC can be installed on Windows Server 2022, Windows Server 2019, Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 10 IoT Enterprise, and Windows 7. It can be downloaded here: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2068602
Would it be possible for you to install it on your current workstation and see if you are able to reproduce the issue you reported?
James Lafleur
Hi James. When I started to install that, it looks like it might be the Remote Desktop Manager software I already use. The icon in the install is the same as the icon for this.
Thisis what's on my PC.
This is what the installer you linked me to is installing.
Hello,
Thank you for your swift reply!
Would you be interested in having a remote session? That way, I could take a closer look at your current configuration and see if we are able to find the culprit.
To do so, simply open a case with us through RDM by going under Help -> Submit a support ticket.
Just make sure to mention this forum thread in the description of your case.
Best regards,
James Lafleur
That's been done. I am talking to my Security team here because a remote session will expose computer names and AD structure.
Thank you! A link to schedule the remote session has been sent to you through our case.
