template VNC password

avatar

Hey :) Using Free Edition 2022.1.27.0 (64) !

VNC templates might be hard to use because it looks like a session with custom credential overwrites the default password you've might put in the template's parameters.

Step to reproduce :

  1. Have a server (linux/AIX in my case) with different passwords for SSH and VNC access
  2. Have a VNC template with custom password set
  3. Have a session configured to connect through SSH and the VNC template linked
  4. You won't be able to connect through VNC because wrong credentials.

Hope these details will help, have a nice day :)

Hello Maris,

Thank you for contacting us on that matter!

That behavior is not a bug, and, for the moment, it is not planned to modify it. You could use a Host entry with templates instead, that way, you could have the credentials come from the template or the Host entry, allowing you to connect with both VNC and SSH.

Hi ! And sorry for having taking this long to answer :(

I'm not sure to understand your answer correctly, it looks like what I'm doing ?
To add more details about my configuration :

  • I have a VNC Template with custom password set (the one that has to be used no matter what)
  • SSH Template with no password set (depending on the host)
  • Host Session with IP address, username and password (usually linked to vault), with both templates linked

With this configuration, I can only connect to both SSH and VNC when both passwords matches. I can only connect to SSH otherwise (the password set in the host session looks like it overwrites the password configured in the templates)

I'm sorry if I haven't got you right, can you detail the process of the solution you've submitted above ?

Thanks a lot, wishing you best,
Marius

Hello Marius,

No problem! Would it be possible for you to provide us screenshots of the configuration of your SSH and VNC templates along with the configuration of your Host entry? I will replicate these settings on our end and see what might cause this. These screenshots can be sent to me via private message.

Hey ! Sure, so here is my host entry :

With both templates

My SSH template is kind of basic, it does not include any host, username or password. It only activates the SFTP and KeepAlive option (which I don't feel like it's working since I'm sometimes losing the IPSec tunnel after a few minutes of inactivities)

My VNC template include a password I mean to be used on each host session I try to connect to :

With this, the VNC template works only if the password set in the host session matches the password set in the VNC template (because I feel like it overwrites the password sets in the template).

I think I've put all confs you need ? Ask me in case I would forget anything :)

Have a nice day,

Marius

Hello Marius,

Thank you for your screenshots!

I have used the same settings and I am currently unable to reproduce this issue on my end. Would it be possible for you to update to that latest version of RDM Free and see if this issue still occurs?

This version can be downloaded here: https://devolutions.net/remote-desktop-manager/home/thankyou/rdmfreesetup
