Disable Automatic Grabbing of Focus (user input)

Disable Automatic Grabbing of Focus (user input)

avatar

I use RDM on Win11, I'm guessing this behaviour would be the same on Win10.

I have one RDP connection open in a pop out Window. I am on Desktop 5.

Whenver I go to another desktop and come back to Desktop 5, the RDM Remote Desktop Window will grab the focus immediately.

e.g. if I am on desktop 5, and focus is outside of RDM... I press start and windows start menu on my laptop opens.

if I go to another desktop and switch back (e.g. win+ctrl+right, then win ctrl left) and press start.. now the start menu in the VPS will pop up. i.e. RDM's RDP window has grabbed focus.

How do I disable the grabby focus behaviour?

Hello,

Thank you for contacting us regarding this,

I believe what you're looking for is the "Grab the Keyboard input" you can find it in the bottom right corner of your RDM it's icon is a small magnet.

Let me know if this helps,

thanks, i tried that just now.. even closed the session and reopened. magnet is off but this behaviour still occurs.

I outfocus RDP/RDM... i.e. i click on the desktop.. press start to check that my laptop's start menu opens.. slide away to another desktop (win ctrl right), slide back (win ctrl left) , press start and the start menu in the RDP session of RDM pops up .. not the laptop's start menu, which is the desired behaviour.

also, unrelated question - is there any way to make a popped out RDP session save its position so that the next time it is opened, it will open in the same spot?

Hello,

Thank you for your reply,

I see, If you go in your entry "Properties" under the "Local Resources" section, I believe changing the "Apply Windows key combinations" option from "On the remote computer" to "On the Local computer" would be what you're looking for.

Regarding your latest question, I would like to confirm which version of RDM you're using? I'm assuming you're using an "RDP" entry with the "Display" configured to "Undocked" is that correct?

Let me know,

Best regards,

i figured out a workaround for the grabby focus problem... if you have another window of another program on the desktop and click that to make it have focus before moving to another virtual desktop, when you move back RDM doesn't grab focus.. but if you had clicked the desktop to remove focus instead, then when you move back it will grab focus.

by moving to virtual desktops I mean using the win ctrl left right arrow keys .. i have not tested via the task view to see if it applies there as well

I'm not sure I want to turn off the apply window key combinations as when I am actually using RDM (I mean when I am inside the RDM window on purpose), I want to be able to use windows key combinations, it is essential really

Hello Mishaxz,

Thank you for your reply,

Do you encounter the same behavior with a portable instance of RDM? To test this, you will need to do the following:
1- Download the .zip file below:
https://remotedesktopmanager.com/home/thankyou/rdmbin
2- Create a new folder on your Desktop
3- Extract the content of the .zip file into the folder created at #2
4- Go in this folder once the .zip file has been extracted and run remotedesktopmanager64.exe
5- Enter your current serial

If you're using the Free edition of RDM follow these steps instead,
1- Download the .zip file below:
https://remotedesktopmanager.com/home/thankyou/rdmfreebin
2- Create a new folder on your Desktop
3- Extract the content of the .zip file into the folder created at #2
4- Go in this folder once the .zip file has been extracted and run remotedesktopmanagerfree.exe
5- Enter your current serial which you can find here: https://portal.devolutions.com/serials ;

Let me know,

Best regards,

Samuel Dery
