terminal garbage characters

We are experiencing some strange output when connecting via a telnet serial redirect to some of our devices. For example, when connecting to one of our devices through its console port, we get this output at the beginning: (This is on version 2022.1.23.0 64-bit with terminal settings set to defaults)

On the same device from PuTTy, and on RDM versions 2020.x.x.x, we get the following output:

Current management interface addresses:
192.168.2.201
fe80::2eea:7fff:fe44:cc7a

Storage Center (sn367675.Dell.local) (ttyu0)

Are there some settings we need to change to get the terminal to behave properly?

Hi,

Try this: in the "Terminal" tab, "General" sub tab, change the setting "Override terminal type" to: xterm
(the setting could also be named "Override terminal name").

Let me know if this helps.

That actually did not change anything. Still the same output. Any other suggestions?

Hi,

I think I will need more information. I assume this is a serial terminal entry. Could you tell me what are the settings for the serial connection? So I can try to reproduce this problem on my side.

Yes, this is a telnet serial redirect through a console server. When I use putty or a 2019/2020 version of RDM, I don't have this issue.

We are currently using a ZPE NodeGrid T16S console server. The devices we have are Compellent SC5020 storage controllers using USB-B micro serial ports with a quad-serial controller. I'm not sure you will be able to emulate this entirely, but I would be happy to get on a Zoom call with you so you can actually see what I'm working with.

And by the way, this also happens with connections using RJ-45 serial. The port speed on the Compellents is 115200 and the connections to the Brocade switches we have on RJ-45 are 9600.

Here is some output when connecting to a Brocade switch:

??#??$??^_^@?^@J???? ^@38400,38400????'^@????^X^@xterm-256color??
Brocade-1:admin> .{bash_logout,inputrc,profile,ssh}xterm-
rbash: .bash_logoutxterm-: command not found
Brocade-1:admin>

some of the bash items scroll through quickly so I can't see all of the output, but it's not static.

I see the 38400 and it's almost as if it's actually trying to connect at that speed. The behavior for some of my Brocade switches differs, with some able to connect after the garbage characters and some cannot. Here's what it looks like when it cannot connect after pressing Enter a few times:

??#??$??^_^@?^@A???? ^@38400,38400????'^@????^X^@xterm-256color??

So, here's an interesting update. The issue does not occur when using SSH Shell. This is acceptable for us for now, but may not be for others.

Thanks for all the feedback. Glad to see you have a work around. But I will continue to investigate, I have a few ideas. I will let you know if I find anything.
