Set Custom Variable Values at Container Level (Similar to Credentials)

We manufacture machines and at any given time we might have 10-12 machines on the shop floor - always a dynamic environment. When the shop floor team tells us about a new machine showing up on the floor they tell us the name of the machine and the IP Addresses for the two key components. What we would like is to duplicate a standard folder with the three standard session entries for each machine and then set the IP addresses at the Folder Level.

We started by defining two new custom variables $HMI$ and $PLC$.

Here is our folder structure and the basic idea

According to support setting the value of custom variables at a container level is not supported. This seems like a really nice feature that would be consistent with a lot of other features like inherited credentials. I think the credentials model with specification via vault, inheritance, custom, etc. could be a really good match for this workflow so it's not a new concept.

Hello,
We are adding in RDM 2022.1 the possibility to override a custom variable in a vault. This means that if you could split your entries into different vault it would be a workaround. I will add your request to our todo list but it could have huge impact on the performance. I think that we would have to implemented it a little bit differently. Perhaps we could improve the custom fields and make them overridable instead.

Thanks for the quick reply. For our very specific application, the vault concept wouldn't really work as we'd be organizing 10 or 12 folders full of items. It's good to know that could be something useful in the future though. Will be on the lookout.
