Check for Updates setting ignored

Check for Updates setting ignored

avatar

Dear Devolutions Team, it seems like there is a change in behavior at least in Version 2021.1.41.0, where the "Check for Updates" checkbox is ignored. Despite there no tick in the checkbox this version started to pop up from time to time with messages regarding newer versions available.
Was there another option added to toggle this message or is it a bug? In an environment, where RDM is distributed automatically, this is rather annoying...

Hello,

Thank you for contacting us on that matter!

RDM should normally not ignore the update settings found under File > Options > Application > Application Startup. If "Enable check for update" is disabled, then you shouldn't be prompted that a new version is available.

If you want to be more than certain that you and your users are not prompted for updates, you could configure a group policy that disables the check for updates. I invite you to consult our help topic on this subject for more information.
https://kb.devolutions.net/rdm_group_policies.html

This specific policy is %Root%\SOFTWARE\Policies\Devolutions\RemoteDesktopManager\DisableAutoUpdate

Don't hesitate to let us know if you have any additional questions!

Thanks for your answer. It took me a bit to verify, but now I'm pretty sure, that configuring this GPO doesn't work as intended. Now after quite some time (one or two days of having RDM open) this popup appears:

This happens with these two GPOs set:

If I remove the GPO settings, the update window is back after having RDM open for a day or two...

Hello,

I investigated and RDM seems to show the message that the feature is disabled even for background update checks. This is indeed unintended, so we've opened a ticket to fix it. This should be fixed by next beta version.

Thanks for following up and opening a ticket for fixing this behavior in the future! But I must admit that I have some doubts if this is the right way to fix this problem. The question for me is: Why are updates being checked for in the background, even though updates are disabled?
Or more to the point: Where to disable these background update checks, if the GPO and RDM settings only disable menus and update checks at startup? Or did I missed something?

Hello,

The problem wasn't that the update was being checked, but that the message appeared despite it not being checked. RDM has a timer that tries to check for updates every ~12 hours since a lot of our users keep RDM opened for weeks without reopening the application, and would still want to see update notifications automatically.
So basically, the timer ticked, it verified the GPO, and then prompted the message, without ever going through the actual update checks. The issue is that receiving a message telling you you can't update makes no sense in this context, as the user never specifically clicked on a button to update, so the prompt comes out of nowhere.

And to answer your question, these background update checks can be disabled with either the "DisableUpdate" or "DisableAutoUpdate" GPOs, or by unchecking the "Enable check for updates" box in File > Options > Application > Application startup. Any of these three solutions should work, but the GPOs are what you want to use if you want to have this behavior for all of your users easily.

Hopefully this clarifies the situation! Let us know if you have any other question.

If there is really no check, than it is ok for sure. I haven't traced the network traffic... ;)

Indeed, there shouldn't have been any online check but with the fix it'll now be impossible for any online check to happen since the timer won't do anything, rather than be blocked and prompting a message.

Hi Hubert,
I can confirm that with version 21.1.41.0 I am also sporadically getting update messages even though, the GPO to disable automatic updates is enabled. In older RDM versions, the GPO worked fine.
Can you tell me in what RDM version the fix is implemented?
The issue shouldn't be taken lightly because with a managed RDM environment, any user who updates without the proper configuration settings can't login to the data source anymore without manually editing several settings.

Hello,

The fix is available in our current latest release, RDM 2021.2.14.0. Please be aware that if you plan to update from 2021.1 to 2021.2, to make a backup of your database as well as of your configuration files to be safe, as there are breaking changes in this version.

Since upgrading to 2021.2.11.0 I haven't seen the notification anymore.

Thanks for the quick fix of the hiccup!
