VMWare Synchronizer & VMRC Connection - An Exception has occurred while connecting

Howdy Folks!

I've been trial running RDM for my team, and so far, pretty amazing. Our environment is somewhat complex and having the ability to connect to all sorts of different systems really is appealing to us.

I'm looking for some help with connecting to Virtual Machines via VMRC functionality, pulled in via the synchronizer tool. I couldn't find too much documentation on the VMware Synchronizer but I did get it to pull a list of VMs relatively easy, so I do know at least connectivity is working to our vSphere environment.

Our environment is running vSphere Client version 7.0.2.00200 (managed by another team). We have an authentication system with two factor tied to it, and that all seems to be no issue here, as I was able to use VMware Synchronizer to easily pull a list of VMS ( my understanding is under the hood, this is running Get-View -ViewType VirtualMachine | select -Property Name, {$_.Moref.Value}.

That said, when I try to connect to a host via VMRC , I receive the following error message " An Exception has occurred while connecting" It does prompt me via a push to my phone via 2FA, so it seems authentication is working there as well.

Locally, I have no issues running Connect-VIServer and also opening a VM using Open-VMConsoleWindow -VM $VMName. It opens up without issue. Note there is a specific configuration that we had to add to the INI file to get connections to work, per VMware Remote Console 11.x requires port 443 on ESXi hosts (76672). My gut feeling says this might be related, but if it just uses the local VMRC player, than perhaps not, as that should reference the INI file located here: %appdata%\vmware\preferences.ini. I am totally just guessing here though.

Am I missing something silly here? One thing I noticed is that the VMRC version in the connection says version 8, but locally I'm running version 12.0.0 build-17287072. Maybe this is actually the issue and I'd have to downgrade to 8 for this to work.

I've reviewed the VMware docs [1], [2], [3], but nothing here has helped.

Hello,

I assume you're using the latest version of RDM, if not, give it a try, available here (Download RDM Enterprise)
Have you tried to open the session with both Display Mode : External or Embedded?

If my guess is right, I'd say you tried in embedded only, and in that case, the version may be an issue.

For now, I don't know if the MFA is a relevant factor, but I'd not be surprised, we'll look into this in time.

Thanks for letting us know if this helps.

Best regards,

Alex Belisle

Apologies, been busy with other projects, forgot to update this post. I did actually try the external display mode, which worked, so MFA is not an issue here (We use Duo). So hopefully that will help with supporting embedded connections in a future release!

Hello,
Good to know.
I talked with a colleague at the engineering and he mentioned that they have a ticket to update this implementation. I linked the ticket to this post to help following up.
Unfortunately, we cannot provide any ETA at the moment.

Thanks for reporting this!

Best regards,
